I tried several Yamaha keyboards yesterday. They did not have the CP300, however. For me the clear winner regarding the piano sound was the CP33 with headphones....HOWEVER, listening to it with the speakers they had it hooked up to, the bass notes sounded boomy or boxy. I think I read on another forum that others felt the same way, I think an "underwater" sound is how they described it. I wonder if there are reasonably priced speakers that would make the CP33 sound closer to the sound through the headphones. They were using Yamaha speakers.
Perhaps I should try the CP300.

Well, there are 2 mono, 2 grand, and 2 electric grand samples on the thing. Although there are at least 2 sets of samples to cover the 6 presets they mostly differ by how "dark" or "bright" they sound.

The "variation" button picks a darker grand and a brighter elec grand.

Anyways, I'm no professional or nothin, but I like the bass just fine.

Glad to hear your comments because I thought the CP33 was outstanding. Perhaps I didn't spend enough time with the settings. What kind of speakers do you use, Stephen? I have a Tyros and I had hoped to use the CP33 as the keyboard with the Tyros(I don't like the Tyros keyboard) I have the Yamaha speakers that go with the Tyros. Would they work ok as speakers for the CP33?
Thanks for the input.
Bob

Well, I'm just not a very picky guy maybe \:\)
Although I think i am at least a little picky \:\)

There aren't a lot of settings for the cp33.
At least that I use.

I just use crappy Logitech Z-2300 speakers
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/231&cl=us,en

They're teeny and fit nice in my rig:
http://shazware.com/piano/rig.html

I use the cp33 to practice piano and when i get sick of the somewhat lame metronome, I boot my pc and use my audigy's soundfonts and such with a full drumtrack.

I do kinda like the bass...

The cp33 feels kinda like the upright i had as a kid. In any case, although the action is a little slow-ish (compare to my other synthy keyboard), I really do like it.

I haven't ever messed with a "tyros".
Ya like it?

I've got a Yamaha CP33. To me, it does sound much better through good headphones, but then, so do all digital pianos. When I shopped, I found a place that had all the models I was interested in, and tested them all with headphones. That was how I picked. I found too many variables with speakers, their angles, rooms size, etc. to compare sound any other way. While I like the sound best through headphones (it's really incredible), everyone really likes the sound through speakers on a gig.

Thanks for the comments jjo and Steve
Steve, that's a beautiful set-up you have. The Logitech speakers are highly praised in the Yamaha forums.
I devoted two years of my life to the Yamaha Tyros, basically a one-man-band, arranger keyboard...sells for about $3500 when new. I quit it cold turkey a couple of months ago. Guess got sick and tired of the incessant rhythms and styles. I want to have a good full sized piano keyboard that will allow me to use some of the features of the Tyros. I'm just a hobbyist but love to play. Have a baby grand that I play at home but I'm 77 years old and away in the winter and want the piano keyboard for use in the winter.

well, those speakers aren't the greatest.
they're pretty "effects"-y, but I'm fine with that. Though they're somewhat colored, they fill my teeny little room pretty well.

My family can't stand it when I don't use headphones so I only get to use speakers when the family is AWAY or I finally got something done and they'll grant me permission to show off.

Buncha music haters \:\(

Well, maybe my grandkids will appreciate piano some day \:D

I practice on a cp33 with headphones. I love that little piano. I have a one car garage out from the house that I go to to play w/o headphones on a Kurzweil pc1x through a stereo speaker cab I bolted together. I like the cp33, but if I ever have any money to speak of I'll get its big brother cp300.
