I bought a Roland RD-700sx less than a week ago. I chose that board based on information from this forum, reviews I read online, and me personnally trying out the instrument on the floor. I had to return it. After about 5 minutes of playing, the tone would change and the volume would come down considerably. Sometimes there would be an electronic noise when it does it. This board was a floor demo. I had the store order a brand new one because I liked the tone and the action felt superior to other portable units I tried. I did an internet search for any trouble with this device and found nothing substantial so I am asking you guys if anybody had issues with it. It is my understanding that Roland makes a solid keyboard and this is just a fluke. Educate me please.

I've spent more than 5 minutes (in a store) playing that model, and have NEVER had that problem to my knowledge. Sounds like you got a specific unit that had problems. frown

I agree, sounds like you may have a defective unit. Also, keep in mind Roland did have a problem with one of their SRX expansion cards in which the sample actually detuned after being loaded. To rule this scenario out, make sure the keyboard wasn't loaded with an expansion card, if it was call someone at Roland to make sure it is or isn't a defective unit. The RD700sx is, to me, one of the best stage pianos on the market today, don't be afraid of it because of one bad board.

Geek, yes I did buy and install the srx-11 expansion board but I took it out to see if the problem went away with out it. Nope, still there. At this stage I am waiting for delivery of a brand new virgin keyboard. Geek, do you know which expansion cards were the problem?

Do you know that Roland have a system update (1.05) for RD-700SX which solves the problem of randomly quietly sounding notes. Try this update if your new keyboard have same problem. It is available here:

Also, it is redundant to load the SRX-11 into an RD-700SX, because it is a similar piano sample as the one which is native to the 700SX. Now, if you want to GREATLY improve the EPs on the 700SX, load the SRX-12!!

Going on a year now with mine, and no problems despite the abuse I put on it, both hauling it around and pounding on it in performance. It's a beast meant for heavy use.

I own a 300SX and an FP-8 - After about 12 years or so I had problems with my FP-8 - a couple of bypass capacitors in the audio pre-amp started to leak, causing the volume to fluctuate somewhat - perhaps similar to what you're experiencing. In my case, I fixed one channel, then 6 months later, the 2nd channel started doing the same thing. I replaced the caps and the board is working fine. Roland was very good about sending me a schematic (small fee) and the good news is that they use generic part numbers so you can get parts from a local supplier.

Thanks for everybody's input. It has been only 5 days since I returned the keyboard but I am already itching for it's replacement. I liked the sound of the RD-700sx except when it would screw up. In about a week more, a new one will be here.

There is a way to reset the factory settings
in the manual. You might want to try that just in case. And as Maxximum said there is a update at the roland web sight you need to buy a seperate usb cable. If you didnt update the old one make sure you do the new. It is just something you have to do ok/
