New to Synthezisers, can you recommend some speakers?

Getting a new Alesis Fusion 8HD workstation.
This will be my first synth, as I'm wanting to get into producing music, and have a wide variety of sounds to play with.
I've not had to worry about speakers before as my digital piano has built in's, so please can you recommend some speakers that won't break the bank, but will produce a nice sound. The synth will be in my living room down stairs.
Cheers,
Italianie

It all depends on what your definition of "won't break the bank" is. I would recommend two things. First, I would recommend you look at studio-type monitors - I think people often refer to the Behringer Truth series, although I'd also recommend looking at the KRK line. compact monitors are available from a good number of manufacturers, but you have to remember that in making monitors small you inevitably make compromises, most likely in terms of bass output and perhaps in other areas too. The second recommendation would be to consider obtaining a basic stereo mixer, so you can hook in the workstation, your piano and potentially other equipment such as your PC or other things you might buy along the way - effects processor, synth module, drum machine ... You might find, for example that you like the piano sound on your digital piano but want to be able to work from the workstation, so by hooking the piano into your set-up through the mixer and using midi (between the workstation and piano) you can do just that. You might also want to add a pad or strings when playing on your digital piano, and using the same set-up you get that option.
