I've been thinking about recording my piano playing for a while now and after searching through reams of microphones it'd be good to get some advice on which to buy. I have a yamaha p-250 digital piano and I want to find a microphone costing around £100 suitable for hooking up to my computer and making decent recordings that capture the greatness of the p-250s sounds. Is such a budget reasonable?

you don't need a microphone at all to record your digital piano on a computer. You can plug it directly in.

If i connect it to the computer directly it transfers via midi and so when it plays on the computer it isnt playing the p-250 sound but it plays the computer's built in midi sounds. Does this not mean i need a microphone?

are you using a midi cable? if yes, then don't use that for this, just a stereo out from the piano to one of the inputs on your sound card.
