I have had a good old PF100 since the mid 90's - great workhorse, still 100%. One of the reasons I bought it was that at the time it had the best internal speakers around - no need for separate amplified units. My questions is, whenever I plug the unit through external amplification it changes the character of the key attack; i.e., as I play up the scale some notes seem to attack loudly while others attack normally, very unpredictable and makes good serious performance difficult - this doesn't happen when on its internal speakers only. (BTW, I'm an advanced pianist so it isn't my touch.) Is there someone who can explain this phenomenon if they have solved the problem with later models. Thanks

I thought there would be a techie out there who would respond - being new to the forum, perhaps I posted this in the wrong area?

maybe it only has mono line-out? you might want to check your manual to see what's your line-out or external speaker option.

also, i don't know if there's such a PF100 model? i couldn't find it on the Yamaha product history list:

Thanks for responding. The keyboard is an early model (purchased mid-90s) and is officially called a "Clavinova PF P-100". Here is a link to some info:

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Cont...PRODUCT,00.html

According to many studio sites, it's still used as the workhorse keyboard although it has been discontinued. I'm obviously no techie so forgive the basic question. Like I said, when on internal speakers, pressing the note harder results in the true pianistic sound expected but when run through an amplification system, pressing the key down explodes or punches the sound unexpectedly - I've always wondered why it doesn't have the same effect under both conditions?

I have one of the same keyboards you speak of. I use it in my recording studio as a midi controler, and as play back for acoustic piano tracks. I have not noticed any difference in velocity sensitivity when using the stereo line out connections. Maybe your external amp is favoring some frequencies within that range.

Thanks JW, I'll keep experimenting to try to get to the bottom of why this has been happening. Interesting isn't it that for all the tech advances, a digital unit 15 years old is still such an overall satisfactory and useful piece of equipment!

Agree, gbosie. Mine has been lugged to a few hundred gigs over the years, before I got a lighter one for that purpose, and retired the p-100 to studio use.

Here's something you might try as a trouble shooting technique for your problem. Try using the headphone jack as the source for the sound system, and see if the problem is still exists. If not, it would indicate a difference in the way the keyboard is driving line-outs.

My back hurts just thinking about how I used to gig with my PF-85. I've got it set up in my studio now, though usually it leans against the wall in a back room ;\)

I'd hazard a guess that the internal speakers don't reproduce all the sound that accureately, and that alot of the bass gets lost. I think it's a fault in the action, that is not noticeable on the internal speakers.

Another thought: have you tried lowering the output volume on the p100, and raising the amplifier volume? Maybe you are sending a very hot signal.
