#678881 - 09/28/08 02:35 PM Need to borrow or buy a BOX for a Yamaha CLP-280

Hi all,

I need to obtain a box for shipping a Yamaha CLP-280.

My fiancee will be moving to join me in a few weeks, and she is keeping her beloved CLP-280, which I helped her buy. (It is an awesome instrument, as many other posts here have attested!)

I am willing to either borrow the box and return it to you in November, or else buy the box from you - whatever works.

The piano is currently in New Zealand and it will be shipped to Pennsylvania. I am currently in the Los Angeles area for the next few weeks. Either I could pick up the box in person, or it could be shipped either to me here, or directly to her.

If you don't have a box, but know how else we could obtain one, please let me know!

Thanks much,

John W.

Either way, I will pay all expenses plus some reasonable amount to make it worth your while.

Assuming that your fiancé did not keep the original box that her CLP-280 was shipped in, it may be worthwhile attempting to contact the dealer from where the instrument was purchased - they may have spare packaging that will be suitable.

Cheers,
James

Thanks for the good suggestion James. Yes, we did try doing that. Unfortunately, her local Yamaha dealer in Wellington, New Zealand only sells a very limited number of CLP-280's, and so they don't have a box. With the economy being what it is there, there are not too many people who can afford to plunk down $7,900 for one of these babies. It's about one third of the median annual income. :-(

you can hire someone (a carpenter or a handyman) to build one for you if you don't know how, and buy some soft padding material at some hardware store to pack the piano parts.

Ahh, that's a very good idea - we may go that route.
Does anyone here know if the CLP-280 comes from the factory in a cardboard or wooden box? (We bought it second hand with no box.)

I bet it was just cardboard box with styrofoam forms inside.

Just make your own box. Disassemble the piano as much as possible, and pack into separate boxes if necessary.

Double, or even tripple box everything. Block the keys by taping a long strip of something 1/4" thick in front of them.
Wrap the whole piano with multiple layers of bubble wrap (the type with 1" bubbles).

Fill up empty spaces in the box with more packing material (more bubble wrap, air bags etc.). Nothing should be able to move inside the boxes.

Tape a bunch of warnings regarding contents on the outside just in case.

If you do everything carefully it'll be just as good if not better than the original packaging. Just make sure to block those keys from pressing down.

Also - this will be oversized shipping. Maybe you can look into whatever company ships it to suggest a packing method - they may have some good advice.

By the way - you could also try contacting Yamaha, to see if they can hook you up with something.
