True Pianos on Windows XP
Audiophile 2496
Home stereo system
Audacity

Play my DP through Truepianos, analog sound out of 2496 into my stereo (MD/Tape In), sounds great through speakers. Trying to record the analog out from my stereo into audacity. Connected "MD/Tape Out" from stereo to "Line in" on the Audiophile 2496. Can't get any input signal in audacity. I've used audacity to record off my Zoom, so I'm familiar with it. I'm not sure what the device "Delta AP Multi" device driver is, no mention of it in the manual. I'm guessing it means Multimedia so Windows will use it. I tried using "Delta AP 1/2" as the recording device on the 2496, no luck. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?
thanks

I would try bypassing the stereo for the recording. I am not familiar with the Audiophile 2496 and how it shows up in Audacity, but I think it might be the Delta AP Multi you're seeing. Try plugging you DP's anologue outs directly into the 2496.

I want to record the sound of the Truepianos output, not the sound of my DP.

Are you using TruePianos as a VSTi?
If so, is Audacity the host?

I am not too familiar with Audacity, but if you are using True Pianos as a VSTi, you should be able to record/play the MIDI in your host application. And then render your project to a wave or mp3.

Here's the link on Audacity's VST support:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=vst-enabler

...which seems limited to VST effects plugins and may not even support VST instruments. I don't think Red Dot Forever has any VST support either, btw. If you used a more full-featured sequencer/VST host like Cubase or Sonar you might be able to just load the midi and freeze it into a wave without having to play it in real time.

But you might try just routing the outputs into the inputs with a stereo rca patch cord and throwing Audacity into record mode on the input while pointing the Truepiano standalone interface to the output you patched. As a last resort you could always plug the output into a Zoom input and record with that.

No, it's the standalone trial version

I'm using Audacity because I already had it and knew how to use it. The reason I wanted to do this has gone away. I was trying to debug an annoying background echo sound when I used Truepianos playing through my stereo. The Truepianos folks said if I sent them a recording out of my stereo, they'd try to figure out what was wrong (pretty nice). Turns out the problem was a default setting in the 2496 for MIDI music playback. I had it set to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth instead of the 2496 AP MIDI. The echo is gone and it sounds great. But now it's bugging me that I can't figure out how to do this recording.

Very creative, why didn't I think of that. I'll try it.

Do you mind explaining what the 2496 does for you and why you use one?

I'm trying to set up a laptop (to do mostly organ) and am slowly learning about interfaces.

I've always been able to record with Audacity after i figured out what setting I had wrong, but I've been using the internal sound generator which it somehow has access to, AC97 or something like that.

If you want to play the keyboard live through the computer, you need the latency of the sound response to be very low or your ear can hear the delay. The 2496 is one of many sound cards that uses ASIO (Audio Stream I/O), which you can look up on wikipedia if you want the whole story.
