I am a newbie to keyboards. I have recently sold my old grand piano (needed the $$, got a great offer), and would like to get a basic keyboard to practice on. No frills, just something that sounds like and feels like a piano. It does not have to mimic angles trying to sing.

Help please.

You can get a good, new weighted-key digital
console for as little as $400-500 (for
example, the Williams Encore is $400
at musiciansfriend.com). Such an instrument
will have grand piano-like sound and
action. You can spend much more than that--
there are digital pianos costing $30,000--
but that's not necessary, in my opinion.
Moreover, no human pianist can play so well that
he's going to sound significantly better
on a $5000 digital than on a $500 one.

My current digital, a Korg SP-250 lightweight
console, was $900 online. Previous to that
I had a Casio AP-24 console, which cost
$700 online. They've both been good,
and I've used them to play the most difficult
classical repertoire, like big concertos,
and they've served well for that purpose.
In fact, my favorite was the less-expensive

The place to splurge is on the bench, in
my opinion, because you're going to be
sitting and playing for long periods.
One could even say that the bench is more
important than the piano. I see nothing
wrong with getting a $400 digital piano and
a $500 concert pianist's bench.

That is highly subjective and inaccurate. I have several times used a 500 buck Yamaha DGX something or other which has a few "piano" and other sounds. The keys are waterfall piano style, but so light in action that the damned thing might as well be an organ. This requires a degree of accuracy and trepidation such that it caused me to hold back and also to be quite tense when using the box on stage.

My new RD700GX has a true piano-like moderately heavy action. I play immeasurably better, with no worry about tension and excess care about hitting clams due to an organ-weight manual on a piano-type product.

In my haste, I overlooked the initial question. Gyro's right: you don't have to spend one or many thousand to get something playable. Check out some stores, and read the threads here. I only know that the Yamaha P120 (old model) has what I consider to be an excellent action. You can probably find the same or better in a newer model, such as the 140. I tried the Roland 300GX, and thought the action was terrible. OTOH, the Yamaha CP33 has an action comparable or better than the P120, and new, is about $1400 list. There may well be other brands that you would like very well for less.
