Hi,

I am shopping for a used digital piano for family entertainment and for my 8 year-old son to take lessons on.

I would like something with many voices and bells and whistles to capture his interest and for the rest of us to enjoy playing with too. But as we are not musicians and not sure of his long term interest; we don't want to spend a lot of money now.

I was told the KR-3000 cost about $8000 new about 8 years ago. Does that sound right?

When was the KR-3000 first made by Roland?

Does anyone have info on the technical specifcations on the KR-3000? Polyphony? Number of voices? Recordability? MIDI compatibilty with todays's computers? Or any other thoughts and comments?

I checked the Roland USA site and searched the web without finding out anything specific on it.

Wow, a KR-3000! I'm using a KR-277, and it's PERFECT. I feel lucky to have such a nice piano. I believe a KR-3000 actually looks like a grand piano (with the sound board and such). The KR-277 uses a standard MIDI2 card, and it has a lot of voices and effects. (around 400). I'm sure a 3000 would have atleast a MIDI2 card, if not a better MIDI card. It'll have plenty of voices, don't worry.

A note of caution: are you sure you want to buy an 8-year-old digital? The fact that you cannot find much information on it could well mean it has already been phased out.

The technology on digitals have evolved so fast that the newer and cheaper keyboards are able to beat the older ones hands down in terms of touch and sound. It might be worth your while to check out the new ones and find one you like at a price you like, rather than chasing after 8-year-old technology, however advanced it may have been in its day. Or at least consider a used digital not more than 2-3 years old.

Think about this: you wouldn't want to buy an 8-year-old computer, would you?

What kind of price are you looking at for the KR3000? It's not going to compete with modern sounds/polyphony, etc. But depending on the price it might be a good option if you don't mind adding a tone module to it.
