Hey guys,

Bought my P120 two weeks ago (I can upgrade to a P140 for free if I prefer it), and now want to start recording some stuff for fun.

What wiring will I need to connect the Yamaha board to my computer? I understand that there are two connection types (midi and USB). How do I tell if I have a midi plug? I'm hoping to find what I need on ebay, but want to make sure I buy the right thing.

Thanks,
Ian

there's much more connection types than that & USB isn't a connection (it's another way to connect to midi by using yamaha's usb midi drivers) midi doesn't allow you to record your actual playing but the velocity/length/pitch you play so a midi device can replay it (so if you'd send a midi recording to someone using an average computer they'd hear you playing on something with a horrid sound)
if you want to actually record yourself you need to record through an analog connection you can do this from the stereo input/outputs on the back but you'll need a better soundcard than what comes with your comp to get a decent sound (i'm using an audiophile delta 2496 it's dirt cheap & works just fine here is a recording i did the playing is sucky but it'll let you judge the sound quality: http://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php...=12424.0;id=430 )
else you can record in mono from the same slots but you'll get lesser sound quality & prolly even worst through the headphones jack but either way you'll need at least 1 input jack on your soundcard (or 2 or a stereo for stereo sound) & decent analog to digital converters so if you have a onboard soundcard that's pretty low end don't expect anything good

edit:also the soundcard i advised you to get also has midi input/output in case you'd want to use midi capabilities (playback of midi on the p120 or recording to a partition etc) but i would advise against getting what you need on ebay as what you need the most beside the soundcard is cables & those are cheap anyway (btw don't get the cheapest ones you'll save 2 or 3$ but you'll loose sound quality because of poor cable quality & poor shielding)

Thanks for the quick reply. It is much appreciated.

As for my purposes, I want to use a midi program to arrange my compositions. Will I be able to import Yamaha's instrument patches onto the computer. If I can, I'd be able to convert my midi into MP3s using the patches, no?

That said, you're right, analogue would also be good to have (but I do want to use midi too).

EDIT: That is a lovely composition, btw. Did you write it?

nope not my composition it's by nobuo uematsu (& video game composer mostly responsible for most of the music of the final fantasy series)

you can find lot of arrangement of his music here if you want to hear more of it : http://www.fantasyreborn.com

as for your questions no you won't be able to import the samples onto your PC since it is disallowed anyway but you could use a samplling library for the piano sound & download yamaha's midi for the common midi sounds but i don't think that's a problem since you could get mp3s with your piano sound anyway by doing this:

record through midi > arrange your stuff > playback the midi by setting the P120 as the playback device > record analog signal from the p120
