Hi Pals, I am a beginner self-learning using Alfred's All-in-one book with Yamaha P70. I have never played any kind of piano before in my life. How close is P70s piano sound to acoustic piano?[/b] I certainly know it cannot match the real one but how among the Digitals? I am in a small apartment, so the 6W speakers do fulfill my needs. I am just through Page 75 in Alfred's All-in-One and not yet got any feel of classical music or any real music. Can guys with P70 comment on how much it emulates the grand piano sound?

Well, I think the question is more complex than any easy answer here could give. But I'll try. I own a P70, and I regularly play a Yamaha C2 and a C3, and sometimes also a couple of Steinway grands and some Yamaha uprights. On a strictly "tonal" level, the P70 sound is "not bad." I like it, actually. But the sound of a grand is far more than just a simple tone. When I play the C3, my fingers vibrate with the strings. The sound of that piano is wonderful and powerful by comparison, and I can actually find it intimidating after a week of the P70. Really, there is no comparison. The tone of the P70 is ok, the action is minimally acceptable for learning up to a point (imo), and it's a fine keyboard for $600. But that's it. As someone must have said, a keyboard like a P70 is not a substitute for an acoustic piano, but for no piano at all. I would say enjoy the P70. I enjoy mine. Just get out and try some "real" pianos and see for yourself. FWIW, I expect to upgrade to a better digital soon. I think there are many fine digitals that far surpass something like a P70 -- it's just more $$$, that's all.

Also - if you're looking for a better sound, but are already locked into P70, there's always software solution, like Synthogy\'s Ivory . You hook up your Digital Piano to a PC, and the PC takes care of the sound. You do need plenty of RAM in the PC though.

Guys! thanks for ur ideas. I totally agree that we will get only what we paid for. Since I am a raw beginner (Self taught), I did not want to spend too much in the beginning. At the same time, I did not want to go for some cheap Keyboards. Moreover, I was more inclined on Yamaha. When my level increases, certainly I am going to upgrade my digital piano. Being my first DP, P-70 will be with me forever. Mark, What is "imo" by the way? I am weak in piano acronyms. Johan, actually I planned for YPG 625 (same as DGX 620) but somehow went with P70 for its light weight (I had plans to travel overseas for a long period). Eternal, Thatz a good info for me on piano sounds. Why not give it a try? Guys, this may be a silly question. I did not realize the importance of metronome when I bought the Digital Piano. Is it possible to generate the metronome from PC to P70 via MIDI connection? If yes, how? Thanks in advance.

IMO stands for "in my opinion" -- an Internet abbreviation, not related to piano per se. You can buy a very decent digital metronome for $20 from any music supply store. The one I use is a Yamaha QT-1 -- http://www.music123.com/Yamaha-QT1-i18170.music
