I have been researching digital pianos for my young son who has started learning to play it and is making good progress. In addition, I'm hoping a new digital piano, especially a digital ensemble, would resurrect my interest enough for me to seriously learn to play it.

I looked at the usual suspects first (the P250, P500, the Roland F5, etc.). But last weekend at a local store the salesman introduced me to the Technics PR903 and PR604. I was blown away by its features. I can get the former for about $4200 and the latter for about $2400.

Then yesterday, at another store, I encountered the Kawai CP175 and was even more impressed by it. The quoted price for this one is $7100, but I was told that the price is negotiable. Although the store didn't have the CP115 in stock, I was considering that seriously because of the price (about $3000). I was too afraid to even try out the CP209. Interestingly the salesman said that anytime within the next 3 years I can always return the piano and trade it up for a higher end model (I would get back the full price - the sales tax) for the old one. This sounds like a great deal for those who want to gradually move up the digital piano chain. I could conceivably start with the CL/CN series and then move up to the CP series.

What I haven't tried out yet and would like to look at is the Clavinova CVP series.

Both the Technics and the Kawai sounded wonderful to me. Assuming that the CVP is just as good, I would now be in a bind. Any insight into which of these pianos I should buy? Specifically, does the great price on the Technics PR903 override any concerns that I might not be able to fix it if it breaks (considering that the company has stopped making digital pianos)? Does the Kawai justify the price-tag? Are there other makes/models I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

The Technics PR703 was my dream piano until recently. It is probably the best at doing accompaniment. I am told by my dealer, who is trying to sell Technics pianos, that support for Technics pianos is now non-existent in Canada. The company that Technics uses to provide support is onto other things now.

Personally, my preferences have now moved to the Roland pianos, specifically the HP107 - I love the keyboard and piano sound. I find I don't really like the Technics piano sound anymore. I tried the Yamaha CVP-30?'s pianos, I liked the sound but I did not like the keyboard (it hurt my fingers when playing loud). I prefer the Roland piano sound to the Kamai. After many hours of demoing over the last four weeks I picked a piano I didn't even get to try before committing to buying it. Today, I take delivery of a Roland HPi-7. I did get to play it at the store yesterday. It has the same keyboard and sounds as the HP107, but not as nice speakers or grandspace, still it sounds great (just not as great). The very same with headphones. The Hpi-7 is a great teaching piano, for new or experienced piano players.

I also have two young children (2 and 4, with my 4 year old starting to learn the piano) which helped make my decision, but the piano is really for me.
