How do I connect my DP (Yamaha P-60) to my laptop (USB Port) to record and playback using Sibelius.
What kind of cables would be required Would any additional interface device/software be required
All suggestions welcome

vgeorge,

There are a couple of different ways to do this depending on what your goal is.

Do you want to record audio or do you want to record MIDI?

Audio would be the actual sound of your keyboard and would be the way to record it if you want to create a cd, upload you playing your kb, or email it to a friend. To do this, you will need a good sound card or audio interface (most laptops do not have a good sound card built in) and software like Audacity, Reaper, Cakewalk, or Sonar (in approximate order of expense). Sibelius will not record audio.

MIDI contains only the keys you press, no actual sounds. This is useful if you want to notate what you are playing, or creating an accompianment track to play back through your keyboard. For this you will need at a minimum a MIDI to USB converter. Sibelius will let you capture the MIDI to notation, but it is not really designed for recording. Software that would be better would be red dot forever, Reaper, Cakewalk, or Sonar. You can also use this approach to play back through software instruments.

If you let us know more about your goals, then we can advise as to better hardware and software to meet those goals.

Rich

It sounds like vgeorge wants to use MIDI because he mentioned Sibelius.

Read the MIDI section here:

There are a number of basic MIDI-to-USB adapters/cables out there. Yamaha's UX16 would fit your application.

Cheers,
Alden
