I have an chance to buy a Van Koevering Digital Baby Grand model Vip 1950 for $4000. It is a 6mo old demo that still has 6mo warr. In my ignorance, I have no idea as to weather this is a good deal or if I am being taken. Since this is no small chunk of change, I was hoping to get some feed back from some enlightend minds in the group.

Try to find somenthing else, for $4000, you can get a nice roland or technics, the van koevering has a horrible action and it is not reliable, try to compare it with Roland or Technics. good luck

I found a web site offering this same piano for $18K.. can this be??

The keys of the piano are connected to the (action) this mechanism is partially responsible for the performance of the piano, allows you to control the volume when you are playing as well as repetion speed, overall it helps to give expression to what you play.
The reason why the Van Koevering is expensive is because it has a computer built in and the cabinet of a grand piano, but I played with it many times and the sounds aren't any good, plus the action is really far from an acoustic piano I feel bad for telling you all this about the piano but if you are asking for help, I'll tell you the true, it is not worth it to buy one.
