Hi All.

I'm new to the pianoworld and this is my first post here. Greetings!

I'm 26 year old and I have never trained to play any instrument at all. About a month ago I decided that I wanted to learn playing the piano. I borrowed an old Yamaha keyboard (from about the 80's) and bought a piano book. Unfortunately the keyboard was too old, and now it does not work anymore, so I'm thinking of buying one.

I've been looking around and I've gotten quite attached to the Yamaha dgx-630 (ypg-635), and I'm thinking of buying it tomorrow.

Do you think this is a good keyboard for a total beginner like me, or should I go for something cheaper? Any ideas or thoughts?

Fast comments are appreciated since they get the keyboard to the local music shop tomorrow. smile

if you don`t need some extra features, only piano sound, buy yamaha P-85 instead dgx-635

Hi again and thank you for your fast answers. smile

I guess I agree about not really needing the extra features of the dgx, but on the other hand the pricing difference is very small where I'm buying it.

So if we don't look so much at the price, is it then any advantage of the P85 compared to the dgx630? I can't really see any on the paper.

Thank you.

I guess you have got your board, but if not, P85 is equipped with better grand piano sound samples. However, the extras on DGX-630 are fun to play with when you're not practicing.

Beginners will love the piano sounds on DGX 630.

I prefer then action of DGX 630 to P85. DGX is heavier.

On paper P-85 and DGX-630 have the same GHS keyboard. However, to my untrained fingers, DGX-630 feels slightly lighter when I compared them at local Guitar Center. Or maybe not lighter, but I just felt that it hit the bottom faster. (It was actually a YPG-635, but I think it's the same as DGX-630).

I just got the YPG-635 a couple days ago. EXCELLENT for beginners. Many, many helpful features.

maxc, are you sure about the better paino samples in P85? As I understood it the DGX630 was equipped with new piano samples (not same as DGX620).

Anyway, I did buy the DGX630 (It is the same as YGP-635 indeed), and so far I'm really happy with it. But on the other hand I don't really have anything to compare it with, and even if I did my untrained ears and fingers probably wouldnt feel much diffrence.

yes the piano samples in P85 is much better than DGX630. However DGX's key feels better to me than P85. don't worry, you can always expand the sound using external midi modules in the future (or software piano)

DGX series are ok.......I love it....

Nice instruments to explore music. When you really thinking about piano, try also the clp300 series.
