I have just received my new keyboard and I think it leaves everything else in the dust.
It is a Yamaha P-250, hammer action, full 128 polyphony, string resonance, onboard speaker and fantastic piano sound.
The beast is big and heavu though, definitely not for gigging.

Were you able to compare it side-by-side with the Kawai 9500? (Probably its closest competitor) I'm seriously considering upgrading to one of these two, and would love to hear your comments.

I know the Yamaha has a better/more flexible sound source (ie. XG banks) which might be nice (but not critical), a built-in simple sequencer (convenient) and I do love my other Yamaha gear... but the Kawai has that incredible action!

Stymied,
Lorenzo

Lorenzo, I hadn't had the oportunity. But www.harmony-central.com in keyboard discussion section there were quite a few guys whi did compare the two. Yamaha came out on the top:
There are a few advantages of the Yammy:
(1) onboard speakers,
(2) 128 polyphony.

I ma not sure if the kawai has multiband equlizer (the P250 does) and built in sequencer (the P250 has 16 tracks.)

The Kawai MP9500 contains a four-band graphic equalizer. The EQ is global, and will affect the internal sounds only (whatever that means - I grabbed that from the manual).

What about the actions? How do they compare? Since I picked up my MP9500 about a month ago I've gone back to my acoustic, albeit a Baldwin upright, only a few times.

For the first little while I plugged the MP9500 into my amplified stereo speakers (KEF C55) and they sounded just fine. Now I prefer to listen through headphones (AKG 240DF Studio Monitor). The only drawback so far that I've encountered is that not all sounds are stereo, however, the ones that are most important to me (Concert grand, Studio grand, Jazz grand) are and they sound absolutely terrific through the headphones.
