Hello everyone!
Sorry for bothering but would you mind to give me advice? My daughter 16 yo two years ago started taking piano lessons and I bought her Yamaha PSR-275 portable keyboard for home practice. Now she's proved her dedication and I consider to upgrade the instrument. She wants 88-key, pedal and decent sound and I want it for less or around $1000. I've found many offers on Craig's List in my area but have no clue what to choose and which one is worth trying. Seems like some of them are older models- no information can be found.
Yamaha: DGX-620 $775 CAD,
........CLP-110 $700 CAD,
........YDP-121 $599 CAD,
........P-60 $950 CAD,
........P-90 $900 CAD,
........P-120 $1000 CAD.
Kawai: PV-30 $500 CAD,
........MR-3000 $900 CAD,
........CA-230 $600 CAD.
Roland: F-50 $750- $950 CAD,
........FP-2 $800 CAD,
........FP-5 $1200 CAD,
........KR-177 $999 CAD,
........EP-77 $450 CAD.
I've tried to find some answers in previous topics, but found it very difficult to form an opinion for the person who is far from music world. So I am asking for help. Thank you in advance.

many of those may be too old to consider, even used. Yamaha P90 is still good, but $900 is too much for a used, since new one was around $1000. if you can spend $1000 and more, then check out Yamaha YDP160, which is a new model since last year and should be good for your daughter. see here:

Thank you signa! Appreciate quick response.
BTW new YDP-160 is up to $2000 CAD - too much.

If you are considering spending a $1000 CAD on a digital piano I would advise you against going the used route unless you have someone that can judge the proposed unit for you in person. If you knew what to look for you wouldn't be here asking us!

In that price range you can certainly find something new that is well suited to the task and you get the benefit of a warranty and service. The DPs that get good mention here in that price range are the Casios, Rolands and Yamahas.

The Casios make quite serviceable instruments in the bottom of the price range. The PX120 (~$400), PX320 (~$600) , and PX800 (~???) are nice boards.

The Rolands I would look at is the FP-4 ($1200). I'm not familiar enough with their home console models to make a recommendation but I'm sure others here can give you more information.

THe Yamahas I'm familiar with that might be candidates are the P85 and the P140. However Yamaha makes a ridiculous number of digital (and acoustic) pianos. Others here will be able to advise on the various models better than I can.

I would also advise reading these threads on choosing a digital piano, especially if you are determined to buy one used:

Hope this helps!

When shopping for used digital pianos, it's
a buyer's market, and you can get terrific
bargains. The reason for this is that the
number of piano players in the population
is small, and so any piano is difficult to
sell. Plus, there's no warranty, and you
can get good, new, weighted-key dp's,
with full warranty, for about $500 (US).
And the seller has no place where he can
unload it fast, because a piano dealer won't
buy it and a pawn shop will give him almost
nothing for it. So no one is going to be
lining up to buy a used dp, and the seller
should take anything he can get.

The general rule when shopping for used
dp's is to offer half the asking price,
and the seller should grab for that because
of the above reasons. Moreover, a dp
is essentially a computer with a keyboard
and speakers (if you open any dp, all you'll
see inside is a few computer chips and
other electrical components connected to
the keyboard and speakers with wires),
and they lose value fast, like a used pc.
A 10 yr. old dp, like a 10 yr. old pc,
is worth little, maybe a couple of hundred
dollars (US)--although it would play
similar to a brand new one costing thousands.

I don't hold with the notion of
buying those expensive $500 units.
For well under a $100 you can get this
Schoenhut model:

It's well-suited for beginners and won't break
the bank.

For the more advanced player I'd recommend
this, also from Schoenhut:

Top-notch sound, and still under $100, and
that would include the bench! You can play
all of the big-time concertos with this one,
and all the while sneer at your friends who
spent hundreds, even thousands more for those
high-priced units. This one is a really good
buy.
