Can someone suggest an excellent set of headphones (brand, model, type) for a digital
piano considering comfort, range, quality, etc.? Comfort would probably be the most
important factor if practicing for 1-2 hours/day.

Dan, your digital may not require an addional amp for headphones, as many have a headphone output. If yours does not, you might be able to connect directly from the output, as the level from keyboards is fairly high, however, there may be an impedence problem. Check with the manufacturer to see if they recomend it. If their output is not stereo, you will need to get an adaptor (the sound will be mono). Radio Shack, as well as others have them. As for brand, most any quality headphone should do. Look for models that cost $100 or more, as they have better sound and more comfort IMO. Most quality headphones will have specs on their frequency range, the wider the better. (Typical human hearing is 20 to 20khz) No matter what type you get, be careful of volume, as headphones are "sealed" on your ear and may cause damage. It is quite easy to get "ear fatigue" making you "tired" and also making you want to turn up the volume, increasing the chances of hearing loss.

Sony MDR-7506 headphones are an industry standard and can be purchased for around $100 from a pro audio dealer.

I did a lot of research and ended up buying Grado headphones. I think they are the 40s...their cheapest audiophile phones. Highly recommended. I think they were around $59. One real nice feature is the ear cups (they are actually pads) swivel so they will lay flat on your keyboard when not in use.

In my opinion (remember what they have to say about that) the AKG K-240 headphones are absolutely the best anywhere close to their price range. In the recording studio that I work in, we have several pair. Some of them are so old that the foam in the ear pieces have worn out, yet they still sound incredible.

The Fostex T-20RP headphones are also quite nice and come with a replaceable cable!

The AKG 240 headphones are also industry standards although they are becoming less common. The problem is that they're so inefficient that you have to really drive them hard to get any kind of level out of them. I think that's in part why the Sony headphones have become so popular. I own two pairs of the Sony 7506's and several Fostex headphones as well. I like the Fostex because each part is user-replaceable!
