Hello again!

So, I'm still pretty sure I'm going to get the Roland FP7, and I want to get it from a local shop where the staff was very nice and very helpful. It costs about $1650 there, including the stand. I can get the FP7 (with stand) for $1450 online with free shipping. That's $200 difference! It's a lot to me.

How should I approach the guy at the store? Should I ask him to match the internet price (even though it's a quote, and not published)? Should I ask for a free bench? I don't want to waste money but I don't want to be a jerk, either: I want to SUPPORT the local stores, not screw them!

I know this is kind of a strange question. I guess what I'm wondering is if you think that matching such a low price will harm a store that isn't some huge franchise. If you'd be so kind, I'd also like some advice about negotiating this sort of thing. I'm really bad at it. How would you go about it if you wanted to spend money locally rather than online?

Thank you!

I struggle with this as well.

If the local store is a large franchise (like Guitar Center), I tend to negotiate by telling them what I can get online.

If it's a smaller local shop, and they have been very helpful, I usually try to negotiate without pressuring them with online price quotes. I just show my uneasiness with the price tag, offer to pay cash instead of CC, ask for something free thrown in. In the end, if the local store has been helpful, I'm willing to pay a bit more. In this case, I'd probably be willing to pay $100 more than the online price. But $200 is a bit much.

How did you arrive at that particular model?

Did you fly out of town to the location(s) of the websites?

Did the local dealer stocking the instrument show it to you?

Have you actually SEEN or TOUCHED this FP7?

If so, where?

I expect the store you've been dealing with hears the line "I can get it for $xxx on the internet" all the time so you surely won't be the first to beat a brick and mortar store up with internet prices. If I want any kind of post sale support I'm more likely to do business locally even if I pay somewhat more. Note that by "support" I don't just mean if it breaks, I mean advice on recording, software, etc. Some local stores will let you take stuff home and try it as a way of differentiating themselves from internet sellers. For that kind of support, I'm willing to pay a bit more.

A variation on the standard "I can get it for ..." might be to add "I'd like to do business locally, what can you offer me in terms of value that I can't get from an internet seller?" and see what they say.

Personally, if I use their store and their time I feel obligated to buy from them unless their prices are just crazy high.

80k, thanks, those were the exact numbers I thought of. That's why I thought asking for the bench would be a good compromise. I'll try what you suggested. Thank you!

USAPT, I tried it in the store from which I plan to buy it. As I said, I don't plan to buy it online. I'm not sure if you're using Socratic irony on me or what, but my wanting to do what is fair is the force behind the thread.

Thanks, Greg! Very good advice. That sounds like a nice way to open the conversation. I'm so awkward at this kind of stuff that I can come off as demanding, and that isn't what I want to do.

Go in to see the salesman and be totally honest and upfront with him. Tell him you're VERY interested in purchasing the FP7 from his store. However, you've done a bit of online window shopping and you can pick it up from ABC Music for $200.00 less. You're not being demanding, you are simply stating facts (in a friendly manor of course.) Know in advance what your decision will be if the store won't budge on price or if they make you an offer. It's always best to go in prepared to make a decision right then and there to close the deal at the best possible price. Now the ball is in the store's court. The worst case scenario, the store won't budge on price. At this point, you either leave your name/number in case they change their mind, or, you make an offer to them.
