Cheap digitals, are way better than cheap acoustics. Besides - there's no such thing as cheap acoustics, unless you know how to tune the damn thing yourself.

MDT this topic has been hashed around before -- you can get some more good info by doing a search, to add to the comments you have in this thread.

i am by no means an expert, but can toss out what might be some helpful comments:

1) this can be a very controversial and hotly contested subject

2) many folks who condemn digitals are basing their opinions on older digital technology. newer digital pianos are much better than the older ones.

3) there is a fellow in the adult beginner section who owns and learned on a digital. he regularly plays acoustics when the opportunity arises and he told me that he has no trouble going back and forth. he is a very excellent player, imo. he did note that he thinks the touch and acoustic issue is more significant for classical players than for non-classical players (he is a non).

4) there is a fellow around here (AJB, i think) who owns a clavinova in addition to a high end grand and he has some interesting perceptions if you want to search out his posts.

5) lots of clavinova info is at

http://www.cvpug.com/

6) don't discount the wife's furniture tastes, at your peril! wink mine really likes the "look" of a grand and that is what she wants in the house, although in many ways i think a digital is more practical for someone like me.

I started taking lessons on a January 1, 2007 using a nice digital I bought with a 45 day return policy. I quikcly discovered how sterile it was when I went into a store and played some nice upright acoustics. I then returned the digital and got an acoustic.

Which digital did you get, so that we can avoid it?

Yes good idea, which one is it? I am guessing a casio perhaps, or Kawai laugh

A good high-end DP sounds better than alot of uprights I have heard/played, just for a contrasting view...
