I want to be able to record with the line out on the piano. I have several questions. First, if you buy a digital recorder to do this (there isn't a way to hook the keyboard (downstairs) to the computer (upstairs)), do you need to buy some sort of cable to make this happen, if so, what one? Second, if you buy one that records in MP3 format or WAV files, then do you need some special software to put it onto a cd or mp3 player or something? Lastly, if you buy one (if it's possible) that records in MIDI format, what type of software do you get to convert it to an mp3? Sorry for all the questions, I know NOTHING about stuff like this.

1. If you buy a digital recorder, you will need cables that match whatever your line out jacks are on the keyboard (usually 1/4 inch instrument cables)and if the other end doesn't fit the input to the recorder, you will need to find adapters to make the connection. Put the recorder downstairs next to the keyboard. Connect line out of keyboard to inputs of recorder, start the recorder and start playing. Then if you want to save it to computer, carry the recorder upstairs.
2. Some digital recorders have built in CD burners that you can use to save your recording in wav format. That would be ideal in your case since you would only have to carry the disk upsrairs to the computer. Your computer probably allready has a program that can convert wav to mp3. If not, you can download a program (ripper) that will do it. I use "Musicmatch" for that.
3. If you want to record in MIDI format, I think you need to get another computer so you can have it near the keyboard. The compuuter would need to have a MIDI sequencer program such as Cubase or Cakewalk to record the MIDI data. If your keyboard has a usb output, that would connect to the computer. If not, you would need an interface device that has MIDI connectors for the keyboard, and a usb connector for the computer. I don't know of any way to go directly from MIDI to mp3. You would have to playback the MIDI file through the keyboard and make a wav file on the digital recorder, and convert that to mp3 as described above.
