My fiance is looking for a digital piano and I came across this on Craig's List. Does anyone know anything about it and if this is a decent piano/good deal?

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/40002080.html

She has been playing piano since she was a kid and she wants to get something to play until we buy a house in a couple of years. She will probably also use it to do some composing, but it won't be hooked up to a computer all the time.

We are looking to spend ~$1000, and have no problems buying a used system. If there is a definite advantage to paying more then we were planning then we will as long as its not significantly more.

What systems would you recomend at about this price point and why? What are the general price levels and what do you get at each level?

Also, any good sites where people are trying to sell digital pianos would be helpful.

Thanks!!!

Looks to me like an outdated model (only 28 polyphony). I can't testify as to how it sounds though.

It depends on what your looking for. Do you want a stage piano or something that looks more like furniture? Do you need/prefer built-in speakers?

We couldn't care less about what it looks like. It also isn't going to move around, so size isn't really an issue. Just as long as 2 people can get it up and down a walk up apartment once.

As far as built in speakers go, its not a requirement. I'm probably going to hook up better speakers to it anyway.

That was my first thought too. That manual is at http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/index.htmlthen enter clp311 for search. The rear cover has a 1996 date on it (that's in electronics years too).

Compare specs therein (last page) to for example a current Yamaha P120 ($1200 new, sometimes less, search for P120 above for manual), with 64 note polyphony, weighted keys, dynamic sampling, half pedaling, etc. This old one doesnt say any of that. The old one has slightly larger speakers, but both would be better adding larger external speakers. I'd urge going slow and carefully and learning what the spec terms mean. They've come a long way since.

it looks like an old/outdated model, and 28 polyphony would not be sufficient at all. i wouldn't consider that. P120 might be a much better choice.

I have a CVP900 (previous generation, grand piano case) and it has held up very well. Digitals rarely have problems.
