If possible, I would like to purchase one keyboard that can function as an acoustic piano as well as a powerful workstation. I know it is difficult to accomplish both, but does anyone have the experience of:
1. Compare the action of the three keyboard? The P250 has the graded hammer, but the ES-8 has the balanced hammer (does it mean same weight over the 88 keys)? On Harmonycentral.com, I read a few reviews citing problematic action with the Roland Fantom X8, does any of you feel the same way? Which one of them feel most like the grand piano?
2. Compare the tone of the three keyboards. (I personally favor the Fantom X8 "steinway-like" sound.)
3. Motif ES8 vs. Fantom X8, which one do you prefer and why?

I know these comparisons are very subjective, but I would like to hear your opinion first before I make the long drive to my keyboard shop.

I think the Fantom X8 sounds better (exremeley subjective) overall than the Motif. However, I a friend of mine who I respect greatly disagrees (although he's slowly being converted). The Motif has some great sounds, but they all tend to have the Yamaha brightness which to me sometimes comes across as harsh or brittle. The Roland, in my opinion, is more flexible as there is a greater variety of sound timbre. Also, the Roland's advanced sampling abilities give it a pretty strong edge over the Motif. Check out the "real-time tempo changes" to audio samples -- WOW!!!

I can't comment on the action problems on the X8, I haven't experienced any. I can, however, comment on the inconsistent info I've found over the years at Harmonycentral.

I prefer the Motif sounds over Roland, which sound too compressed and closed to me. That said, I know some great keyboardists (including Steve) who love their Roland boards.

I agree with Steve about the Yamaha brightness, which is why I like to run the Yamaha keyboards that I play through tube preamps. It tames a bit of the highs and adds some body and fullness without sacrificing the clear and open Yamaha sound. Also, I frequently use a Steinway sample library rather than the stock Motif pianos since I am not really a fan of Yamaha pianos. In some contexts (like playing live with a large band) the Yamaha piano samples cut through better.

Seem like those 3 are competing with one another.
True that opinios are very objective since they are musical instrument!! P250 is considered stage piano. Not synth. workstation eventhough it has some synth element with it. To me, Motif has better prestocked sounds and larger wave rom size than Fantom. But Fantom has wave rom expansion ability which will give you very nice instrument sounds but more $$. Motif can be expanded with plug in boards but they are better for polyphony expansion than additional wave rom they give(not that good sounds). Basically, Motif gonna give u more hardware expansion(other peripheral devices) while Fantom give u more sounds rom expansion for your need. I like key action of Fantom more than P250 which is cold and harder for me. Motif has weak user interface(i.e. little green screen for all those fancy functions monitoring). Some Fantom prestocked sounds are not that high quality. BTW, what feature is more important for you? You simply can not get all the good feature in one workstation though.
