One of the joys (?) I had when purchasing my grand piano last year was ferretting out the actual price of the instrument and negotiating what I thought would be a fair selling point for me and the retailer.

I went digital shopping the other day (specifically looking at Yamahas) and the dealership had a nice and complete selection - everything from the CLP 220 on up to the 280. A nice selection of CVP's as well (not to mention the grands - but we won't go there).

Each of the digitals was marked:

MSRP: $XXXX
Our Price: $XXXX

Now, I know that in the acoustic game, "our price" is where we begin talking. Can I assume the same thing about the digitals? I am in no hurry whatsoever, I'm just looking for something to replace my Casio PX 1000 and be a good alternative for silent practice.

I'm not sure about Yamaha...but I think I will be purchasing a Korg C-320, and was offered a price lowered than the "Sale Price/Our Price". This might depend on how big/small the store you are going to is. The price I got was from the owner of the store, which probably makes a big difference.

That was the situation with me. I dealt with the owner of a large store. I don't know if the fact that I didn't buy a grand from him would hurt or help..

difference is whether it's sold online or via the dealership system, the first is very price transparent and the price is probably as is (if you can find a better online price go there instead...); the second method involves the same type of gamesmanship as traditional pianos, imo..

My experience when shopping was all the digitals were priced at about the same as all the reputable on-line stores. So there really was no negotiating. The sales person basically told me when I was ready to make a decision, he would beat any on-line price, and he did.

With the exception of the Kohler, which the sales person explained I would probably not find any on-line pricing because it is made exclusively to give the local music stores a little more latitude with pricing.

To my knowledge, the CLP and CVP series (as well as the equivalent Kawai instruments) have no on-line presence in the US.

Even when you buy the lower end units that are sold online, there is some room for negotiation. I purchased a Casio PX310 at Guitar Center and they matched the best price I found online with no question asked. I saved $50 over their online price.
