I played ROLAND's new RD700sx , The "Superior Grand" piano sound is really awesome! Best piano sound made by ROLAND. IMO it's better than the main piano sound in P120 in many ways. I think YAMAHA should put the 4 layers sample piano sound in high level of CLP series into new P series. It would be great if P140 use GH3 keyboard.

Well, to me, the P120 is head and shoulders above the FP2, RD-170 and RD-300SX. Those 3 Roland stage pianos are in direct competition with the P120 as they are in the same price bracket. IMO the Piano sample beats the lot and the action is much nicer. I don't know how well the Roland boards are selling, but i know the P120 is still selling rather well.
Please note that this is my personal oppinion.

While it looks very similar, the photo posted by gryphon is not a P250. However (pure speculation here), could it be a P250 replacement? At this point, I'm totally confused on the P140. Can't find any reference to it on Yamaha's U.S. site.

Did some searching...the picture from the info.audio.hc360.com site appears to be a P-300 and not a new model.

Just a few thoughts...

I'm not yet convinced that the P140 is a replacement for the P120. The P120 has done very well in several applications, especially as a stage piano. However, the P140 brochure shows a very limited back panel interface as compared to the P120 (e.g., single AUX OUT only, no "TO HOST" connector). Additionally, there is no USB interface - something the P250 currently has and a feature long desired for the P120. Unless Yamaha is targeting the P140 at a different market, it doesn't seem to be a very versatile stage piano.

Sorry for the rambling...hopefully the P140 pricing will yield more insight.

There are barely any output ports on the back, it doesn't seem like a true stage piano.

I talked to Yamaha Germany.

The P140 is the update fo the P120. It has the same amount of sample ROM but a better compression mechanism, meaning more samples at the same amount of ROM.

The whole board looks quiet disapointing to me. First a thought it would be a P60 update.

I am disappointed also, they haven't really upgraded any specifications, and IMO gone backwards in style.

i wish they would at least give it a lower msrp, sounds like its saving them money in the manufacturing process but they are not passing any savings on to the customer

sounds more like a downgrade to me i mean 2X 6W speaker instead of 2X 12.5 ? i don't think some marginally better samples can make up for this

I just saw the P-140 advertised in the U.S. online at:

http://www.andysmusiconline.com

The availability is listed as "Pre-Order" and the price is essentially the same as the P-120 at $1,199.00. So much for earlier rumors that it may have a lower price.

Given Yamaha's track record, I was expecting much more in the replacement to the successful P120. Some of things I wanted/anticipated included FLASH memory, more individual voices, improved internal speaker system, and a USB interface. On the fringe, increased polyphony and an internal power supply would have been nice additions. However, in my opinion, the brochure indicated that only the FLASH memory feature was incorporated in the P140.

I would like to sit down and play both a P120 and P140 side-by-side for a couple of hours to gain a better understanding of the comparative strengths/weaknesses and why the P140 is better than the P120. I don't have that option in my area of the country - not even sure of the actual dates the P140s are to arrive in stores.

Therefore, I did a quick side-by-side P120/P140 comparison of a few features & functions using the respective Owners Manuals.

Here are just a few things I noticed:
- Variation: Three levels (Mellow-Normal-Bright) to adjust "brightness." This seems very similar to the BRILLIANCE control on the P120. However, the P120 has a dedicated Variation for each of the 14 voices in addition to the BRILLIANCE control.
- Fixed/Variable Output: I was hoping to find a "software switch" control for the RCA-based AUX OUT connectors to switch them between fixed and variable. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find one.
- SPEAKER Switch Function: I was also hoping to find a "software switch" to control the function of the speakers when headphones are used (i.e., the SPEAKER switch function on a P120). Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find it either.
- SPLIT Mode appears to have a limitation of 4 voices for the left hand (pg. 22).

At this point, in my opinion, the P140 appears to be a fairly lackluster successor to the P120. It may have improved samples and nonvolatile memory, but it doesn't seem much of a step up. In some ways, it seems a step back, especially as a stage piano.

Comments by anyone else?

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Yamaha have provided no reason to upgrade (it isn't really even an upgrade). I would choose the P120 over the P140, purely because of the outputs, the P140 lacks outputs. It is very hard to call the P140 a stage piano, it is more like a home version of the P120.

Yamaha finally issued its press release on the P140 on September 9th.

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Cont...53DNEWS,00.html

Nothing we haven't heard, but the release states "The P140 and P140S will be available October 2005, and will replace models P120 and P120S." as the Harmony Central article did several days earlier.

Interesting...

On the Yamaha USA website, the P60, P120, and P140 have moved from the "Stage Pianos" page to the "Contemporary Pianos" page.

I'm guessing that Contemporary Pianos are suited for home or stage?
Any thoughts?

On the Yamaha Corporation of America site, the P60 and P120 were on the "Stage Pianos" page along with the P80, P90, P200, and P250, but are now on the "Contemporary Pianos" page along with the PF500 & PF1000.

It's interesting that the Yamaha Europe site currently has the P60 & P120 still grouped with Stage Pianos; the PF1000 is also listed there.

There's also the YDP series (YDP113, YDP223, and the new YDP323) with respective polyphony specifications of 32, 64, & 64.

Based on the specifications, I believe the PF500 is "somewhat similar" to a P250 in terms of its sound/sample capabilities with 128-note polyphony, while the PF1000 has 96-note polyphony with a large LCD display similar to those on some Clavinova's. IMO, both PF models are more suited for home use as they both have matched stands with integrated pedals (3).

This is just a guess, but I think Yamaha is in the middle of making adjustments to its product lines. I think they made some minor revisions to the P120 to obtain the P140 which they intend on grouping with home pianos. I also think we'll see some new Yamaha stage pianos sometime next year as even the P250 has been around for awhile. I think they will come out with a successor to the P250 and also have at least one new lower priced model with 128-note polyphony. With these changes, Yamaha enhances its home pianos and has new stage pianos that (from a specification perspective) put additional pressure on the RD-300SX & RD-700SX from Roland. Again, all of this is speculation on my part.

I bought one yesterday for our own home studio.

Great feel - but not as good [piano] sound as expected.

Norbert - Any comments on how the feel and sound compare to a P120? I would assume the feel is very close, if not the same, as the P120, but I am curious on the samples and sound. Thanks for any info you can provide.
