I asked about the weird digital chime/buzz at G4, and the smell. Regarding the chime, he said every p-140 will have that same effect at the same note, so no use exchanging it for another one- it's just an artifact that got recorded into the sample. Unfortunately it's not a pleasant sound, especially in piano 1, and really stands out as it;s the only key that does so, and the better the headphones the worse it sounds. He also said other models do have similar anomalies, so the point is the P-155 could just as well have something like it, at another note, even if its overall sound is better. So returning it & waiting for the 155 isn't necessarily the answer either- for that issue/nit-pick (obviously many upgraded features though and some will never notice what I'm describing inmine).

Regarding why the p-140 had a strong pesticide odor while every other keyboard & electronic product I've ever bought didn't, the reason is its particle board, which has to air out. It is diminishing a little by now, so I think that will be Ok. It just surprised me how strong it was, and I was thinking it would be there for the long-haul. Apparently not.

Anyway the technician of coure could not assure me the p-155 would be free of the same issues, as it's the nature of sampling- but hopefully at least its C.F. sampling technology will be a significant upgrade and any similar chimes will sound less alien/digital if it hassomething similar. I am thinking I'll just return the p-140 anyways, and if I don't prefer the P-155, worst case scenario I have to buy back the 140, even if at leass of a deal as I got this time. That effect is pretty muffled in piano 3.

The technician also suggested that from now on, I become Roland's customer.

OT: I was at my local music store the other day to feel out some of the most expensive Dp's I could only dream of. I try'd the Nord Stage 88, i wasen't that impressive with their key action. Nice board anyways. They also had the Yamaha CP300 stage piano..their key action diden't impress me either.

When i play'd the Roland RD-700GX...now that had a holy **** feeling all over it. The key action was just simply amazing! Nothing like i felt before.

And to tell you the truth, I even try'd the Yamaha DGX-630 wich to my suprise had a better sound the most of the other DP's in the store....the DGX model is much better then most people on this forum like to think. You say a toy? Then it must be one hellav of great toy, becouse it really kicks ***! It even had a better key action then Nord Stage 88 imo.

But I'm going with Roland the next time I'll get my self a top notch DP!

I agree. There isn't much north of what I have now I would want to upgrade for in terms of feel, that is until I get to the RD-700GX. It's so sweet I could even justify the expense if I weren't also sacrificing weight, onboard speakers, and *potential* ivory feel coating issues in the process; but I'll have no excuses once Roland lends that action down to their more basic models.

In the meantime I'd settle for something with the feel of the P-140 & the tone of the DGX-630. And I'm glad to hear someone else say that about the 630's sound, I thought it was just me. They should start incorporating that tone into all their D.P.'s. Or at least the option as one voice. The "live" grand piano.

S.L. yeah I was thinking he might have wanted me to be some other manufacturer's problem for a while, but if he did he didn't let on. This guy was nothing but patient, professional & courteous. I'd feel confident in Yamaha's service if I ever had a real problem.

Congrats on your new DP!!
It is a very nice board.

I'm willing to bet that many people wouldn't even take notice to the artifact unless you specifically pointed it out to them. And then some probably still wouldn't even hear what you are talking about. You have a good ear and are particular about your sound.

I was playing a 61 unweighted keys Casio keyboard for ~ 3 months, so a had very little experience when I started shopping for a DP. But I still easily found anomalies on every one I tried. For the most part it seemed like as the prices went up, the quirks went down, go figure!!
After about 3 months of research and trials, and budget creep (starting @ ~ $300), I narrowed my search down to:

Roland 700sx (gx wasn't out yet)
Yamaha CP300
Yamaha S90es,

I ended up with the S90es
