I am an adult who started taking piano lessons a year ago....after a 35-year hiatus. Have been practicing on a fairly simple Yamaha keyboard and taking lessons on a Yamaha Clavinova. I now want to upgrade my home keyboard to a digital piano. It's so confusing when you start looking around and comparing .... and I've only been looking at Yamahas! Anyone have any thought/suggestions about Yamaha CLP-230 or YDP-223?

What about "used" vs. "new" digital pianos? I honestly don't know the best way to go, but am leaning toward new.

I opted for new and got the CLP-230. Since my piano is in the living room, I wanted it to look like furniture. I'm much like you. I restarted lessons in October, almost fourty years away from my childhood lessons. For myself, I didn't care that it's not loaded down with "features" I'll never use. I like the quick access buttons for the few things I do use. I very much wanted and got the three pedals. I guess it depends on what you want for your piano. New made the most sense to me, coming packed with a full five year warranty with service in my home and full trade-up value for five years.

There will always be a better model round the corner. Get yourself to a dealer and have a look at what they've got. Play as many DP's as you can until you find one you really like and buy that one. Happy hunting.

3 level AWM Dynamic Stero Sampling is a step up on the YDP223 as is half pedalling.
So sounds like a better piano sample and half pedalling, but 10 voices instead of 14 as you rightly point out. Poly still at 64. Same speakers too (20W X 2).
Also, the 160 has the same GH keyboard as the 223.

Thanks everyone for the info. I am definitely going to go try out the different pianos to see which feels and sounds best to me. And, I think I've definitely decided to go the "new" route. Happy Easter to everyone!

[/QB] The way I read the specs it looks like the 160 is a replacement for the 323 not the 223. Like what was stated earlier Better sampling and half pedal are the improvements. I think it would take a YDP180 to replace the 223. The improvements in the 160 don't out weigh the access of functions of my YDP-223 in my opinion. I haven't seen anywhere that the 223 was being dropped yet.

We'll have to wait and see what's next from Yamaha, but it looks like the YDP-223 will be a strong contender for a while longer.
