I am close to buying a digital piano. I don't play (yet)but my 2 kids are starting lessons soon. I am down to the Roland FP-5 and the Yamaha P120. Price is within $200 of each other so that it is not a big issue. I have seen some posts saying that the Yamaha has a heavy touch. Roland one seems to have a lighter touch (but I am not sure if it is a realistic touch) and more gadgets like backround drums, bass and chords. My concern is a easy transition back and forth to an accoustic piano. Any thoughts? Any opinions are welcome. Thanks.

When I was looking for a digital after playing acoustic for 20 years, I found the Yamaha P series to have the most realistic touch (for me). In that it had the heaviest touch. There is a 3-tier touch adjuster, so if you don't like the heavy feel, you can set the piano to be more sensitive.

One good part about the Roland is that they sample from Steinways, while Yamaha samples from Yamahas. But I'm happy with my Yamaha... I didn't need gadgets, and I liked how the Yamaha came with a sustain pedal that had "half" sustain, rather than a simple "on/off" pedal. Not sure what the Roland has.

A P-60 would even be good enough for kids, probably... and much cheaper. Up to you, though.

The Yamaha touch is heavier than my real piano. On my Yamaha P120 the middle C key down weight is 74 grams. On my Mason & Hamlin acoustic piano, the down weight is 46 grams when the pedal is depressed and 60 grams without the pedal.

The extra weight of the P120 action provides the player with extra control and expression. The P120 also has a more "realistic" and balanced sound.

Thanks for your insights on the touch. I will check out the sustain pedal on the Roland. The gadgets on the Roland are pretty cool but not sure if they would be more of a distraction for the kids. I have this scary vision of them pushing lots of buttons but playing very few keys! lol

Thanks rintincop. Also, I was surprised at how loud the seemingly small speakers are on the P120. I hear alot of people advocating external ones. Certainly not needed to make it louder in the home. Is there some other reason? Also, do external speaker need a seperate amplifier or do they use the one internal to the P120?
