Someone is asking $600 for the p60 (this is way over priced for a used one), but what is a fair price to ask for?

Another someone was asking $250 for a dxg505...is this a fair price?

Also any ideas on how good these keyboards are?

When shopping for used digitals, it's a
buyer's market. Digitals are essentially
computers with a keyboard and speakers,
and so they depreciate fast like
used pc's. The competition is intense
in the digital piano market, and there's
constant pressure to reduce prices on
new dp's, so chances are you can get a new
dp for about the same price as what
a used one is selling for. There's no
place a seller can unload a used dp fast,
since a piano store would not buy it and
a pawn shop would give him almost nothing
for it. There's no warranty, and you
can use that as a bargaining point.
Morever, any piano is hard to sell because
the number of players in the general
population is small, so no one is going
to be lining to buy it, and the seller is
going to have a hard time moving it.

The P-60 sold for about $745 new in 2005,
so $600 is way too much (how much would
a pc that sold for $745 in 2005 be worth
today?). I would offer only about $150-
200, and maybe come up a little in bargaining,
if it's in perfect condition (test all 88
keys with and without the sustain pedal)
and you really like it, but no more than
$300 max, and the seller should be glad to
get that. Any more than that and you're getting
into about the price range for new dp's.
This should be a good instrument, with grand
piano-like performance.

The DGX-505 sold for about $630 new in
2005. However, this apparently has
unweighted keys, so that's a big strike
against it, although it does have 88 keys.
This would probably come loaded, however, to make
up for the unweighted keys, so it might
be more fun to play than the P-60. I'd
offer about $125 to start and go up
to a maximum of about $175-200, provided it's
in perfect condition.

Honestly, you'll never ever become a good player if you stick with keyboards like that. Even older weighted keyboards would be a better choice.

Go for a Yamaha DGX-620 (a.k.a. YPG-625). A bit higher, but for the price, there's no better deal.

Strat- I just wanted something decent to play on because I live in a college dorm. I actually have an upright at home, but only get to play it during my summer break when I go home.

Sorry, but in reality, your expectations are unrealistic for the $. You won't get a weighted action keyboard for less than at least 600$ and even then...

Your choices are to spend $ to get a synth with springy action and no weight or to spend more and get something that will play well... or to not buy anything at all. Maybe you'll get lucky and find somebody selling an older keyboard with weighted keys. You never know. But in a store, you'll need to spend a lot more to get something decent.

Actually I believe Yamaha and Casio both have decent and competitively priced offerings for well under a $600 price point. Casio boards start pretty low (see Privia line) and the Yamaha P Series is not too much more expensive.

These are prices for buying new. Used versions on E-Bay are usually much cheaper still. The Casio PX-100 and PX-110's can probably be found for under $300. Though they are not the best actions, I would consider them acceptable, especially when compared to a semi-weighted or unweighted action.

I do not think your expectations are unrealistic.

Gyro has some good points in his post. The only thing I would point out is that a 10-year-old keyboard is a lot more usable than an equal age computer. Computers need support and updating in the software to keep them safe (and after several years they will no longer offer support) while a keyboard is a stand alone unit with no real need for software updates and virus protection software.


I saw a Kawai ES-4 in very good condition get sold on E-Bay for under $350 a few weeks ago. Kawai is known for being pretty decent and it wasn't that old. If I had the money I would have bid on it.

In agreement with Strat, the P-60 (or P line in general) probably won't get you the most bang for your buck. The cheaper ones are also not as good of actions as some of the other competitively priced options. I've heard good things about Casio. Thought the day would never come. But their digital pianos seem to have quite a following with the middle of the road consumers these days.

dundeal, maybe you want to pay a visit to local shops to check out some models there, and you'll have a better idea of what to expect. I'm saying this because I am not sure what you want from a DP. If you think of it as a keyboard with weighted keys and better piano sounds, you'll be fine with budget models. However, if you are experienced with acoustic piano, and want a DP to be closer to a real one, you may have different ideas yourself when you get your hands on a DP.
