#700323 - 11/14/04 02:48 PM Kurzweil RE-210 vs. Roland HP-103 (or other suggestions)?

Need some opinions:

I'm planning on surprising my husband with a digital piano for Christmas (recreational, in-home use, piano). I would like to stick around the $2000 range, give or take a few hundred. My husband is sort of an audiophile, so my main objectives are quality stock speakers/amp, clarity/authenticity of sound, and dynamic range. Action is next in importance, while voices are not really an interest (except as a tie-breaker).

To give you a better idea of what I'm not looking for, here are some examples of models I didn't like, mostly because of speaker quality:
Yamaha P120, YDP223 (max volume was pathetic)
Roland HP-2 (HP-103 is better), FP-2, FP-5

Now, here's what I'm considering, but would like more opinions or ideas:

Roland HP-103 (best price, $1795): I was impressed immediately with this instrument. Excellent piano sound quality, not too many bells & whistles, and I LOVE the "dynamics emphasis" effects.

Kurzweil RE-210 (best price, $1688): Have not found any reviews on this instrument. At first, I wasn't impressed at low volume or when standing off to the side, but sounded great at high volume. Very user friendly, and other voices were better than HP-2 or YDP-223 (haven't compared HP-103 voices).

Pretty sure I like the HP-103 better, but I haven't had the chance to compare them equally, side-by-side.

Any opinions or other suggestions? Has anybody ever played the RE-210, or heard anything about it?

I don't care for the Roland sound when amplified through their speakers but there's no right or wrong on that one.

Have you looked at the Yamaha P-250, the top of their line in stage pianos? About $1800.

I haven't seen a P-250 yet, nor have I tried any of the CLP's. I'll look into that, thank you.

I would seriously consider a P120 or P250 and then if your husband wants even more sound, you can get him an inexpensive pair of powered monitors (speakers) next year. ;-) I especially like the M-Audio BX8's. They just seem to work really well with the Yamaha stage pianos and can be had for less than $500 USD.

BTW:

If you end up going with a stage piano, don't forget to purchase a heavy duty stand, sustain pedal, and bench (oh and a pair of headphones).
