My sister has a Yamaha DGX500 and I'm encouraging her to get an updated digital with weighted keys. She is hesitant to spend very much money and I feel she needs a better practice piano since she plays beautifully.

I played the Casio PX200 yesterday at the Guitar Center and thought for $699 with 128 polyphony, 16 watt sound system, USB & Midi, with fully hammer weighted she couldn't get better for her money.

Is there a better choice?

At the $700 price range, the main competitors are:
Yamaha p70
Yamaha YGP-625/DGX620
Casio PX-200

All of them have weighted actions, the casio will be the firmest. If she is already a yamaha fan, the YGP-625/DGX620 is probably the most likely upgrade path.

I have the YPG625, and I'm happy with it, but after 6 months it's already obsolete with only 32 polyphony vs. the 128 cited for the Casio.

I think you made a good choice Joan, until Yamaha gets more competitive, the new Casios are probably the best bang for the buck.

Thanks Sid and Eternal,

I'm up visiting my sister in the Twin Cities and more than gently nudging her to consider the updated keyboard. I told her you agreed with my choice of the Casio. I noticed it comes with a cabinet like the DGX and 3 pedals. It felt very much like my acoustic piano and the weighted keys were so realistic.

It also has a card slot for storage of up to 2gigs of midi data. It certainly would be a good deal for her.

The PX-200 does not have a cabinet for $699. The PX-800 is the model that has the stand, pedals, built in cover, and upgraded 40 Watt sound system and it costs $899.
