i'm going to get a roland fp7 next week ($1300-1800 depending on where you buy). i really liked the one i tried. the fp4 is a little different and 200-300 dollars cheaper, but they are very similar. you can search youtube to hear what either piano sounds like. i like them because they feel good, have internal speakers, and also have over 300 voices, but are still real digital pianos, not "synths" or whatever. there are wooden stands available too, so they look nice in a home setting.

i like the rolands a lot (a LOT!) better than the ydp213 i tried. i'm not sure how different the 213 and 223 are.

anyway the rolands are worth trying out, at least. i'd say to try out as many keyboards as you can, even if you can't afford them, or they're cheap. it will help you figure out what you're looking for (it did for me, anyway).

good luck!

i would say go for the yamaha, and preferably the clp-280 or cvp-409. when buying a digital , forget a budget of 1.6k, that will only get you a toy, not an instrument..all casios are ridiculous toys..
when buying a DP, there are really only 4 feasible choices :
1.yamaha clp 280
2.yamaha cvp 409
3.Kawai CA 91
4.Roland HP 207

concentrate on flagship models of yamaha,Kawai and Roland..everything else is just toys for 10 year old brats

Allow me to disagree Baco80. The newer Casio keyboards are quite amazing for the price. True, they may not feel as "solid" as top end models, but the touch and sound are quickly becoming favorites among those who give them a try. For the price, they are tough be beat.

To each their own, but I would suggest do not pass on a Casio sight/sound/touch unseen.

The Casio PX-800 is on display in the Guitar Center here, a very nice DP, you should try it, why pay double just for a name. Although, if your just wanting to quickly get rid of your Tax rebate...???

I like mine. If I had more money and knowledge at the time I would have went into the Clavinova lineup.
I'm a new re-beginner and it exceeds my needs right now and should for many years to come.
If you want to save more $ look for an online source like I did mine with no tax and free shipping. Mine was $1599 to my door.

$1.6k is more than enough to get a playable DP. if you really want to play, you'll play on keyboard-shaped rocks if you have to. most players never get to have something as nice as a $1.6k digital piano. it is a huge privilege to be able to spend that much money on a hobby.

Most of the more expenisve Yamahas/Clavinovas are not sold on-line, but through dealers.

You may also want to take look at the Casio AP line, such as the AP 500, which goes for about $1399, I think. It's a more substantial console model with 128-note polyphony, USB, SD Card, etc, - lot of features.

I wouldn't get a Clavinova from online dealer. Do a search here there was a thread about that very subject a couple weeks ago. Headaches could possibly outweigh the savings. When I get ready for a Clavinova I want the full support of my local Yamaha dealer.

i think Casio makes good DP for people on the budget. surely Yamaha or Roland would be better but then their comparable models cost at least 50% more than Casio.

on Casio, AP45 is an older model and has 64 polyphony, but it plays nice and i liked it when i had a chance to try this. PX800 is a newer model, it sounds and feels good and has 128 polyphony, plus a portable design (which many like). i somehow prefer more cabinet design.

Baco80, i think what you said is not true. For instance there is literally no difference between CLP280 and 270 except for wooden keys. Roland HP207 would be similar in play and sound to HP204 except for wood keys and some options. CA91 surely would be a standout because unlike CA51 or 71 it utilizes a wooden board. however i personally did not like the sound of CA91. i tell about experience as i tried all these pianos except for CVP409 or 407.

besides when and if you try Casio you realize they make good pianos, not top of the range but good enough to carry you on for some years.

CVP-407 and CVP-409 felt almost the same to me except that CVP-409 had a rather unpleasant (unless you have sweaty hands) Ivory feel which cost an extra £1200. So, yes, maybe on Baco80's list the CVP-409 should be replaced with CVP-407 as it seems unwise to spend £1200 extra just for the ivory of the white keys (even if it was real ivory which unfortunately it isn't.)

oooo, at last! I'm a member of a brat pack! Lol

I had several plays on the HP207. Still preferred the FP7.

I have an AP-45 and love it. It's very feature rich and I like the keyboard feel, though I confess I am a beginner.

But my choice was based on a strict budget constraint. I started looking for $600 pianos and moved up, wanting a console model. With your budget, I think the AP 500 would be worth a look if you can find one, since it's more up-to-date in terms of technology:128 note polyphony, and so forth. Several members here have shared their experience with them.

With a very low price and the same technology as its brothers : the kawai cl-25 i got is really impressive !!!
If you need a simple piano, with a few but essential sounds and a low but sufficient amplification.

A nice surprise for the price and...
it has got the speakers UNDER the keyboard, that is very nice and sounds like a real piano instead of the casios that have speakers ABOVE the DP (which make my ears suffer)...
