Hi,

I've been playing piano for almost a decade but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to organs. I have been trying to find the most ideal way to produce a Deep Purple sounding organ to jam with my friends (bass, guitar and drums).

The advice I received so far was to check out keyboards. I played on a bunch of keyboards at around the $400-500 range, and found a few really nice ones. I'd probably splash out on a new keyboard because I'm 18 and living at home but I'd like to know if there's any sort of non-electronic alternative for the sound I'm trying to get. Are there upright organs that would sound the same/better? Should I waste time checking or just go straight for a keyboard?

(BTW, the keyboard has a pitch sliding thing which rules... great, realistic sounding instruments, and dynamic keys that respond to the heaviness of the touch. The only thing it lacks is weighted keys.)

Hello, crapht,

People don't come to this board very often, so your post has been languishing there for awhile.

I'm not sure what you mean by a non-electronic alternative if you're looking for an organ sound. The classic electric organs like the Hammond are much bigger than a keyboard and still incorporate electronics. Pipe organs are huge machines. Reed organs used to be around in parlors and small churches but I haven't seen one in actual use in years. They were powered by pressing a pair of foot pedals that worked bellows to compress the air used to sound the reeds. Somewhat like an accordian on a larger scale.

Maybe if you could post a clip of the sound you're looking for, someone could help. Also, reposting in the Digital Pianos - Synths & Keyboards board might attract a little more attention and bring a response.

Here's an easy one. Jon Lord played a Hammond console through a Marshall powered leslie speaker. You are talking about a very expensive and heavty rig these days. There are specific keyboards that produce classic organ sounds. I use a Roland VK-7. It has different amplifier modelings one of which sounds like Jon Lord's rig. It also allows you to vary the amount of overdive distortion for just the right effect. As for dynamic touch response, organs don't do that. Volume is controlled by a foot pedal. The keys are not weighted either. There are several good organ keyboards out there. Hammond XK series, Korg CX Series, Roland VK series, as well as some good midi modules too. Check out Voce and Vintage Keys.

Hi,

What about a virtual B3? Try native objects B4.2. This also lets you define Amp and speaker combinations. You can also download a 30 day demo.

This can sound exactly like Jon Lord from In Rock to Made in Japan etc etc.....

Search for "PAPLOOO" (the third "O" is important) on 'You Tube', he's recorded vids of Highway star, Fireball, Child in time, Lazy etc the sound is AWESOME!
