Anyone here that plays Organ know this piece? My band is playing a pretty good band transcription. I am just curious. It is a very good piece and sounds good for a transcription. I bet it would sound interesting on an organ \:D .

Regarding Ives' Variations on America for the organ: I have played the piece--thirty or so years ago. It's fairly challenging, both for the organist and for the organ. You need an instrument with a good capture action to get all of the necessary registration changes. About two-thirds of the way into the piece is a section that mimics a calliope, and if the organ you're using doesn't have the right stops for this, it's not as effective as it otherwise might be.

At one time, I owned an LP recording that included this piece. It was a theater organ, played by none other than Virgil Fox. The piece contains some delightful musical satire and other good humor, brilliantly highlighted by Dr. Fox. (By comparison, an LP recording of the piece by E. Power Biggs was humorless in the extreme.)

Have fun the piece!
