Hi Frank! Yeah, I think that this place is dead now too. I occassionally check down here for new posts but never see any. I think that discussion related to this area now takes place within the coffee room when it does come up anymore. However, it would be nice to bring this place back to life again!

I'll bring it back. I just hope it's not seen as moving off-topic and making the whole thing go south. Such is not my intention, but then again, this entire topic may very well be nothing more than a study of good intentions gone bad. Nonetheless, here goes:

First, to preface the thing: For as long as I can remember remembering things, I have been fascinated--perhaps "obsessed" is a better word--with the veritable plethora of contradictions we face every day in our lives.

So, with that in mind, here goes:

1. Why do we, as a nation, make such a priority of "remembering" such things while simultaneously, but on the personal and individual, insist that the "healthy" thing to do is to forget and move on?

I.E., a man in mugged. He wants justice. No, he wants revenge! He's angry, bitter, and understandably so. But the "professional" advice he's going to receive is to "let it go" and "get on with his life" and so forth.

Why the blatant contradiction between what's good for the "one" as opposed to what's good for the "collective"?

2. And there's this:

After all, can it not be said that much of what's behind 911 are the other countries involved who, like us, are simply determined to keep alive, in their respective collective conciousness, the "memories" of their past?

3. And there's this:

For a nation in which most still adhere to the predominantly Christian notions of "turn the other cheek," such dogged determination to "never forget" seems out of place.

4. And this:

We still remember, for example, "Pearl Harbor." But to what end? I mean face it: It's not like the "enemy" back then isn't now one of our best pals--at least in terms of economic partnership.

So what's the point of remembering these things at all if, in the final analysis, it becomes just another special day marked on the calendar.

5. And there' this:

Since I used to drive a big-truck, statistics about the number of people who die each year on this nation's hiways took on a whole new meaning.

So how come no one wants to remember the 43,000(+) who do die, every year, in vehicle crashes?

No, collectively speaking, we're too "selective" about what we want "us" to remember. It reeks of "agendas."

Those involved directly, those who lost friends and loved ones--they will never forget.

Is it really healthy to make an anual thing of it so the rest of us, to whom it's not so personal, can make a display of "remembering"?

I don't know. I just ask a lot of questions.....

The man mugged was the victim of a random crime. If the mugger was a stalker, set on mugging this man again and again, then it would not be in his best interest to forget and move on.

The 43,000+ who die on the highways are victims of accidents. If they were victims of a group of people who were trying to kill drivers and passengers, then the comparison would have some weight.

The 3,000 killed on 9/11 were victims of premeditated murder and their murderers are still out there planning more victims.

We still remember Pearl Harbor to commemerate the citizens who were murdered and to help prevent the complacency that enabled the event to happen.

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

I don't know either. Just a few of my thoughts.

Its ok to think to much.
I would like to answer all of the questions but I have no luck.
To remember our past and historic events
Is a way for us to prevent...
I would think that by remembering
We are also acknowledging
all of the mistakes
Like the ingredients in a cake
Past on from generation to generation..
Its only information.
Some historic memorials calls for celebrations.
For what ever the statistics or facts may be..
Remembering these issues should help us solve problems to some degree..


Not trying to be a smart mouth, or know it all...
Just practicing my skills at writing in a different way. I hope to not offend anyone, or be the last post and kill this topic.
