Two of my best friends in the piano industry have teamed up to manage Bechstein distribution here in the USA. They are Ken Ambrose, CEO and Bob Preim, National Sales Manager of Bechstein America. Both of these fine gentlemen have deep and broad experience in the industry for many more years than they would ever admit! \:D More on their careers later.

There are some very exciting changes taking place at Bechstein. As they take place, I hope to be able, with the permission of my friends, to bring them to the attention of those here on the Piano Forum.

Due to competitive situations, I am limited in what I can discuss in a public forum. So, if I am somewhat evasive with some details as time goes by, please be understanding.

The first announcement is that C. Bechstein has acquired the Bohemia Piano Company in its entirety. The factory operation of Bohemia will remain unchanged except that it will be renamed C. Bechstein Europe. It will continue production of both the Bohemia and W. Hoffman brand pianos. [Edited] W. Hoffman will be marketed to Bechstein dealerships. The synergies created by this purchase will undoubtedly lead to further advantages for both companies. I know of no changes in marketing of Bohemia.

Another major change is in Bechstein's national marketing. As many of you know, a new Bechstein showroom facility is being completed in the next month on "Piano Row" in NYC. It will be a VERY unique "European-Style" showroom. It will enable potential Bechstein buyers to play a variety of Bechstein pianos side-by-side in a unique evironment. Due to its price range, it it difficult for most Bechstein dealerships to stock a broad selection of instruments. This will enable serious players to evaluate and choose their Bechsteins effectively. More details later.

BTW, it is not my intention to become a source of technical[/b] information for C. Bechstein. So, please don't try to use me that way. I say this because, in the past, dealers and "socks" have tried to gain competitive advantages by making innuendos about certain manufacturers. My information, at least at this time, is limited to the broader marketing issues.

Thanks.

As Steinway has expanded their offering to their dealers with the Boston and Essex lines, C. Bechstein will now expand its offering to selected dealers with Bohemia
I'm not trying to read more into this than is here, but offering lower-priced pianos contracted in Asia (Steinway's case) is somewhat different from offering a European high-priced line that is Euro currency based, and a mid-priced European line that is soon to be Euro currency based.

This leads to the speculative question of whether sooner or later the Bohemia brand sets sail for the Indian Ocean.

Interesting news. I wonder if they are going to keep the Bohemia line. Bechstein already has quite a lot of brand names for they more affordable pianos (Hoffmann, Euterpe etc.).

The acquisition of Bohemia by Bechstein was posted here about 2 months ago, and the poster was roundly pilloried for spreading "rumors."

Read it here.

Press here.

So it goes...

Hi George, I was the "pilloriee" (?) I knew I was right, just thought it would do no good arguing about it here.

Funny how the representatives of Bohemia tried to contradict the news of the sale less than two months ago.

Anybody know the difference between the W.Hoffman and Bohemia uprights? I know W.Hoffmans are not now sold in the US but when I played one a few years back I thought the upright was quite good, especially for the price.

I have been corrected.

Bohemia will not be marketed as a 2nd line for Bechstein dealers. Its marketing will remain unchanged. W. Hoffman will soon be marketed to selected Bechstein dealerships.

I have edited my original post.

Can you tell us more about what a "European style" showroom will look like? When you mentioned this in a post a few weeks ago I thought it meant it would be old fashioned(but very beautiful)looking. But when I recently visited the showroom the salesman said it was going to be ultra contemporary in style.

I'll be visiting it in Mid-May. I am told it will be very contemporary.

It is designed similarly to Bechstein's Berlin showroom. It has been described to me as "modernisitic, glass and metal".

I'll give you a full report, with pictures, when I visit. The Grand Opening should take place in May. I'll try to arrange for an Open House for PW enthusiasts.

If anyone want to know how a contemporary Bechstein showroom with lots of different model exhibited looks like, watch the C. Bechstein Nederland website: http://www.bechstein.nl/

It's all in Dutch but I am sure you will all manage: in the left menue, click [Digitale showroom];then in the menue that is shown in the second column, click in the second row on [Kijk gerust eens rond] = "have a look"; when then clicking on one of the 5 Bechstein crowns on the floor plan that pictured, a 360° angled view is allowed of that particular room.

TLuvva,

The C. Bechstein Center the Netherlands is located at a place called Woerden near Utrecht, some 60 km south of Amsterdam

Its funny how strongly she responded to you Vince in light of the current info. Guess she did this on behalf of the Bohemia distributor in the USA.
