I'm in Spanish 1 right now. Have been all year. Its very fun to be learning a foriegn language (even if I do hate all of the in-front of the class diolects!) and I was just wondering who else can speak spanish here. Obviously for some of you, it will be your first language. Just thought that I would post a topic to try and take our minds off the war!

Je peux seulement parler anglais et une autre langue. Mais, malheuresment, je ne prefere pas a parler cette langue. Je pense qu'on sais pourquoi avec le monde aujourd'hui.

pour moi, c'est un peu necessaire a Geneve pas que j'habite a cote de Geneve dans une ville avec 400 paysanne qui ne parle pas Anglais (naturalment ).

Mais, c'est encore dificil pour moi (et mon ecriture est pior (comme vous voulez voir!).

England (and I think the US?) have a terrible habit of not teaching languages "seriously". I don't mean the teachers are no good but since English seems to be a universal business language, there is never any encouragement from the society that it's important (and maybe for most, it isn't ... ?).

I've lived on 3 continents already and still travel frequently all over the place - however, although meetings are in English, it's always nice to be able to say a few words in local language. You fit in better, get more out of the location / people and don't get tarnished with the "ex-pat" / "senior manager just here to cause trouble" label ...

Of course, travelling doesn't help my piano practice any

Maybe it will disappear like Yiddisch, the language of Eastern Europe Jews.

Maybe France will feel to ashamed to export cheese or wine and the whole of these two traditions will disappear like the Dinosaurs have.

Maybe there will be a special international court for judging people who dare speak French after the outrageous behavior of their government.

My favorite language of all is Italian.
Every time I go to Italy, everybody calls me "Dottore" (sometimes Commendatore, once Ingeniore).

Teve aqui um advogado paulista e uma poeta canadense, mas não os vejo mais. Só tem nós dois, parece, quem falam. Eu preciso sempre praticar para não me esquecer, e não tenho ninguém com quem falar!

Eu tenho a mesma problema (quase)... A minha Esposa e Portuguesa mas ela fala muito bem Inglesa e Francesa tambem. Portanto, para os muidos, nos falamos Inglesa em casa.

Ha 6 anos passado, eu vive en Cascais, Portugal (perto Lisboa) para 3 anos. Estava um bom experiencia mas agora eu me esquerco muitas palavras porque eu vive tambem em Bangkok e Hong Kong para 4 anos e eu aprende(?) Thai!

(Drat, this is more difficult than I thought - I used to be fairly fluent but now the words just come in French instead!)

Apple, this nice thing about spanish is that if you know the alphabet, everything is spelled exactly how it sounds. Thats what my spanish teacher says anyway, and from the spanish the I know so far, it is holding true. However, there are some occasions, just like in english, where you must beware of the silent letter!!! Usually right at the beginning of the word.

LOL!!! Surely you mean AÑOS, not anos, which is something entirely different. Then again, I notice that you didn't use accents (or, in this case, those little curvery lines that you see sometimes over the n) anywhere else either. I just thought that that one was funny!

Sorry, jgoo, but that's Portuguese, not Spanish. He said "6 years ago, I lived in Cascais, Portugal (near Lisbon) for 3 years." Anos in Portuguese means "years" (años in Spanish). Lots of Spanish and Portuguese words are very close in spelling and pronunciation, but there are enough significant differences to make it very difficult (if not impossible) for a speaker of one to have a conversation with a speaker of the other. (Did that make sense?)

But maybe as a student of "Spanish", you are aware that the Iberian peninsula supports at least five distinct languages, and many regional dialects. We've already seen Portuguese here. What you are studying is more technically "Castellano", the dialect of Castilla, the region of Madrid. Don't try to use "Spanish" in Barcelona (they prefer Catalan), Vitoria-Gasteiz (better learn Basque), or Santiago de Compostela (how about Galician?).

Why so many? Well, the whole idea of national languages (one country, one language) is a pretty modern development in the world. Most languages have little to do with national boundaries!

Benedict, those really were the days my friend! All the criticizm directed toward France does not bother or alarm me. There is something that does cause me great concern. The last time I was in France(About 10 years ago) I was served sliced bread. Am I witnessing the beginning of the fall of French civilization?

Actually, since ten years, there has been an incredible change for the better. You can find absolutely anywhere in Paris very good traditional bread.
The cause ? A reaction of boulangers agains the overwhelming tide of supermarket bread which did not have any of the qualities French bread makes us so proud.

Do not worry about the reactions to France.

In six months, either a solution will be in sight in Israel-Palestin and the whole (civilized !)world will gracefully admit its doubts to this US strangely elected and reactionary government was right and sincere and friendships will prevail.

Or the US non-reactionary people will decide that this government is not exactly the best thing that they did make happen and will vote accordingly.

Volviendo al espanol, las lenguas me apasionan!!! Estudio Espanol y Frances aqui en el instituto, y Aleman en mi tiempo libre. Ademas, tengo ganas de estudiar el Chines y el Japones cuando vaya a la Universidad (pero vamos a ver que resulta de eso!!).

Yup, I use a US keyboard connected to my laptop and even my laptop (with a Swiss French layout) is mapped in US style. Since I touch type, it's much easier than learning the differences (e.g. the Y and the Z are interchanged).

However, I have no clue where all the special symbols are but figured you'd work it out

Anyway, as stated, your version is Spanish ...

Yo estudié francés en la escuela secundaria y la universidad. Aprendí español por accidente «en la calle» entre mis amigos latinos. Tambien, yo asistí clases en alemán y en italiano en la universidad, y asistí un curso para adultos para aprender portugués. A las veces, salpicaré en otras idiomas para una diversión. ¿Es una manía muy bizarra, no?

While holding down the Alt key, you press the keys on the keypad on the right side of the keyboard. Sometimes its really more of a hunt to find the right ones! I used to have them memorized for last semesters Spanish Final, but have forgotten them. I will be needing them again soon though, so I better re-learn all of them!

Here's an example: Alt+160 = á Alt+161=í etc. I think that you can get all of the accented letters and the curvy lines over the n with an Alt+16X combination, but its the upside down punctuation marks that I really have trouble finding!!!

¡ = Alt-0161

¿ = Alt-0191
