I agree! People who walk around grabbing and kissing others who are strangers or even casual acquaintances ought to be slapped in the face!

Why don't you try that next time! wink

I figured the tension in my shoulders and pained expression on my face would be enough.

Maybe next time I'll yell in their ear . . .

Or throw your drink in their face while yelling in their ear! I mean cause a real scene! That will be the last time they try to do that! To you at least. laugh

Bite their lips or slovenly lick their cheek. They'll be too embarassed to say anything, will never do it again and you wouldn't cause a scene. laugh

I don't think Russian gymnasts kiss each other full on the lips. I always thought there was a very fast double-cheek kiss.

Would make a pretty funny Saturday Night Live skit, though . . .

They sure do! I was incredulous until I saw for myself as well. It really looks very odd. It almost looks kinda romantic at first. Watch closely next time. smack full on the lips. There was one time I saw the russian coach (I do watch a lot of gymnastics) go to kiss Nemov on the mouth after a rountine, and Nemov turned away at the last minute kinda awkwardly, like girls will do at the end of a less-than-stellar date :-)

The double cheek kiss thing, I see women tennis players do at the net after a match, mostly in europe tho (I watch TONS of tennis).

gosh, all this talk about kissing.....I gotta go find someone.....

I'm more of a hugger than a kisser.

Did you know ther is an 80% that person kissing you carries the Herpes Simplex virus?
Herpes Simplex Virus I or II can be spread by kissing even when the kisser does not have an obvious cold sore or fever blister.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that grandma should not be allowed to kiss the baby, but herpes could end in one generation if people were educated and careful.

Hey, how about a one-generation moratorium on kissing?

So true Kenny.

I haven't had a cold sore ever .... I've been kissing for years too.

Everything ... in moderation ... I suppose smile

You'll have to trust me on this. Don't ask why. Most Russian men do not kiss one another full on the lips.

That may be true. But I'm not talking about most russian men, I'm talking about what I've seen on the gymnastics team. This isnt my opinion, this is what occurs. Next time you see a meet with the russian team. Watch for it. You'll be surprised.

I have no idea if other russian teams/people/men do it or not. I'm only reporting what occurs on tv at gymnastics meets on the russian team. You may quote me on this. If I had a paypal merchants account, I'd wager a bet with you on the issue (and I'd wager large) :-)

The thing I hate! ! Is seeing people (teenagers especially) kissing each other for ages in public places (You see it all the time at school) It's really annoying. Like today at school there was this couple just standing in the middle of the corridor kissing and blocking my path, it was really awkward, I was like 'excuse me' and they didn't hear me (or they ignored me) so I had to keep asking until they moved. Ok, a peck on the cheek I'm fine with, but seriously some people need to control themselves. wink

My mom has a friend who, every time she sees me, gives me a great big hug. I don't find this uncomfortable at all, but I would be a little uncomfortable with kisses on the cheek and Very uncomfortable with a kiss on the lips.

In my opinion, the only person who gets the full on lips kiss is your spouse or Boyfriend/Girlfriend. Maybe a cheek kiss for close family/children(just MAYBE), and hugs/handshakes for everyone else.

Ooo no no no! I know one person in my circle of friends that kisses on the lips when she greets us. I don't like it and I don't know anyone else that does it thank goodness.

EH Some serious advice here............... I don't know where you're going to be for New Year but if you're in a British pub at midnight either cling on to your SO for dear life or hide in the toilets. I wish there was a more delicate way of putting this but basically, the stroke of midnight is like a signal for every man that's drunk 10 pints of cider and has the breath to prove it to stick his tongue down your throat. Yuk yuk yuk! Aaaarrrggghh!
Just hide. Really. I hate to colour the wonderful perception you have of this country but it pays to be ready. Of course you may have your own way of dealing with these "little trials" and if you have then good luck to you. Remember, when politeness and tact fail, mindless violence is always the best option. laugh
