ICQ (= I seek you) is an instant messanging program. If you have ICQ installed, you get an account with a number which serves to identify you. You then also have a list of friends (also known by their numbers), and whenever you are online on ICQ, you can see which friends are online (and likewise they can see you) and have real-time conversations with them. I don't have an ICQ number as I prefer AIM and MSN (which are quite similar), but I find the concept of instant messaging quite fascinating.

I have MSN but have never used the Instant Messenger. I was told that it causes viruses. Is this true? Do you know? Aside to Plays: Did you see where Bach kissed me??????? It was truly quite *innocent*!

Thank you. I have MSN but have never used the Instant Messenger. I was told that it causes viruses. Is this true? Do you know? MSN allows to send and receive files which, of course, could contain viruses. Or someone could send you a link to some malignant website. However, all file transfers need explicit approval from the receiver. Basically, if you take the precautions you'd also apply to e-mails (don't open attachments from someone you don't know, don't follow suspicious links, etc.), you should be quite safe. However, all those messaging protocols are proprietary, which means: If you have MSN, you can communicate with other MSN users. If you want to talk to someone who has only ICQ, you need ICQ as well. I therefore recommend using a program like Gaim , which supports all common messaging protocols. However, you still need an account for each.
