Wow! Amazing Piano(s)! The wood on the Estonia is just fabulous, and the M&H doesn't look at all shabby either! I was at Ori's twice with my daughter, I had the same experience. He was solicitous and totally sincere. He has an amazing assortment of pianos and is, beyond his many opinions, extremely knowledgable. Best of luck!

Jeffrey, Don't think that Ori and I have not already discussed the possibility of an Estonia 9 footer, among other things. I don't think I could give up this 190 though. We shall see how the collection grows! In the meantime, I am thoroughly enjoying these two beauties. I will start thinking about dates for the party. I don't want it to interfere with people's plans for the upcoming holidays though. Ori is right, the Bubinga finish plays with the light, depending on the angle, and gives you many different perspectives on the finish.....part of what makes the piano so spectacular. I will have to get myself one of those Halogen spots to take advantage of the full effect. Apple, you are welcome to come over any time....you won't even have to clean. Warren and Kluurs, thanks so much for your well wishes.

How the heck do some of you people work up the scratch to buy 2 (or more) top tier grand pianos? I'm a degreed professional and have been playing for almost forty years and have never come CLOSE to owning even 1. Just saying......

iconoclast, 1) Obviously, some people just have a lot more money than most of us. 2) On the other hand, priorities often come into play. It's amazing to me that people who repeatedly spend $30K on a car that will be worthless in 8 years typically think that's a lot to spend on a piano that will provide joy for generations if treated properly.
Still, owning TWO world-class grands is quite rare.

Hey I resemble that remark! My car is 8 years old, my piano is 2. My car is not worthless, but overall my piano will hold its value better.

Iconoclast, As personal as your question is, I will address it, because I do want people to know that it is all about priorities. First of all, I am NOT independently wealthy, by ANY stretch of the imagination. When I was in my early forties, I went back to college to ultimately get a Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy....(best move I ever made in my life). That opened up doors for me that I could have never imagined back then. Today, I am a Hospital Administrator in Healthcare Quality Improvement, I teach in the Schools of Medicine and Physical Therapy at my local State University, and I still treat patients in a Private Orthopedic Clinic on Saturdays. In other words, I work my a** off for what I want in life. I live alone, and don't have to answer to anyone. I drive a very modest 2002 Subaru Forester. I don't get caught up in worrying about whether or not I will have too many payments and not enough in the bank, somehow I always make it work out. My house has equity, I use it. Three months ago my father went out to his car with a rifle and shot himself.....he did all that worrying stuff and look where it got him. I will not duplicate that pattern. My pianos are a window into my soul....a way to express myself like nothing else I have ever known. I would pay whatever I have to to have that level of joy in my life. Like I said......priorities. I hope that satisfies your curiousity.

Congratulations Dan on your new piano. What did the other pianos have to say when they were shown the door? I think that pianos have personalities, and I would feel terrible getting rid of the others. I would worry about their new homes!
I know what you mean about priorities in life. I've come to the conclusion, after going through a really scary time a few years ago, not counting the more recent times, that you have to do things that mean the most to you when you can. This woke me up, to put it lightly, and now if I want something, I will persue it to the best means I can.
I'm telling everyone don't ever say someday because "someday" may never come. I know too many people who have said someday about a trip to visit relatives, someday to spend time with their spouse, and when the time comes, either of them is too ill to enjoy their time together, or it's plain too late. The same goes with owning one of the best, within the means, musical instruments whether its a piano or something else. If you can afford it, go for the best you can get. Why settle for something your soul would regret later.
You sum it up perfectly here: "My pianos are a window into my soul....a way to express myself like nothing else I have ever known. I would pay whatever I have to to have that level of joy in my life."
Sorry to hear about your dad.
John

By the way John, I believe you are right about the pianos having personalities. It pained me to see the Steinway and Bechstein go, albeit to great homes. At the time I thought I was being "practical", given the space considerations and such. Now I'm not so sure. Anyway, water under the bridge....I love my new addition. Dan

John, Joel, Dan: Life-altering events have a way of smacking you upside your head, waking you up & realizing what your priorities are. John, I had a wake-up call at the age of 27 (24.5 yrs ago)...diagnosed with cancer, had surgery, chemo & was not given a great prognosis. I celebrate that life-altering day each year...a "thanks" that I survived & am here to enjoy each & every day. Approx a year after my diagnosis I came across a wonderful saying (see my signature line) & it has been my motto ever since. So, now at the age of 52 I'm attempting to learn the piano. I enjoy reading these posts & seeing all your fabulous pianos. Keep those great pictures & wonderful stories coming. Cathy

Dan,
My condolences for your Dad. Here's wishing you many years of joy with your new Estonia. I'll admit that I've said less than complimentary things about special veneer finishes (and especially bubinga!) in the past, but yours looks darker, richer and redder than others I have seen, and I have to say, very nice indeed!
Best wishes,
-Michael B.

Dan,
Thank you for opening up a door in your life that, I am sure, is a difficult one to open. By sharing this and your motivations, you may help others think differently. You certainly are effecting me.
My deepest condolences to you on your loss and my thanks to you for having the guts to share it.

To all of you I say Thanks so much for your understanding and supportive comments. You are a terrific group of people. It is obvious that this forum can and does act as a sort of cyber family, with one common bond amongst us all....the love and passion for the greatest instrument ever invented. Life should be a celebration, and we all know that you cannot have a great celebration without music!!! All of you should celebrate being alive and enjoy your wonderful instruments. I also laud those of you that not only play, but sell and maintain these incredible machines. Without your devotion to them, the players would have a difficult, if not impossible, time acquiring and caring for them. Thanks again all, your support is greatly appreciated.

Dan,
I just read this thread again as I was unaware of your father's tragic death when I posted, I am deeply sorry for your loss. If I remember correctly you lost a good friend less than a year ago as well. It has certainly been a difficult year for you and I wish you a better new year. You have certainly been a major asset to PW, when I see your screen name I always look for your comments because they are not only insightful but also lite hearted and fun. Once again I look forward to meeting you.
Best, Steve

Thanks so much, Steve, for all of that. I very much look forward to meeting you, and the rest of my Piano Forum friends, as well. I am planning a piano party in the near future, so I am anxiously looking forward to the ability to put faces to the names. Thanks again, it has been a tough year for loss, but some very good things have happened as well. Life has a way of balancing itself out somehow. All the best, Dan

Dan,
I don't think I am going to be able to make your first party but hopefully the one after that. I go in for a bi-lateral hip replacement at the end of next month. I am pretty darn young for this procedure but I just don't have much of a choice. Gosh, I wish you lived closer as I am sure you could hook me up with some great PT. Mine has been a difficult year as well and I look to my piano, music in general and my PW pals for comfort, oh and my cat. You are right, life does have a way of balancing itself out, especially for those of us who are willing to give.
Best, Steve

Sorry to hear about the impending surgery Steve. To have both hips done simultaneously indicates to me that the condition of the current joints are pretty degenerated and, undoubtedly, causing you severe pain and loss of function. I wish I knew some good PT's in your area. Actually, my cousin is an MD and Sports Medicine Specialist who runs a Sports and Orthopedic Clinic for Robert Wood Johnson around the Manalapan area, if that is close to you. Hope you can make the next party, although I do not have this one planned yet, so who knows. All the best, Dan
