Those vaccinated are left to nurse the rest who have it! So far two down, two to go!!! \:\(

This one has been mild, erratic fever, aches but lasted 7 days for Mr. BeeLady. In 18 years of marriage I never remember him being down that long!

Our local news states it is striking about now, and Mr. BeeLady's office has had a near 100% hit rate (well, there are only 6 people! :p ). How are things in your neck of the woods?

Last year I took the flu shot--was really sick for at least two weeks afterwards--right at Christmas. This year I refused it and so far I'm fine. I'm not sure the shot is so effective.

Was it a LAIV or an inactivated vaccine?

Yup Beelady, Ithink it's here. I insist the whole family gets their shots & help coordinate transporting the klan to the 'needle facility' each year so I don't have to cope with the 'side effects' later.

Not in Phoenix either -- but I'll tell you my recipe for fending against or fighting it off:

5 oz boiling water
1 teaspoon Splenda
1 teaspoon butter
3 oz Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum
1 packet of Theraflu.

Mix in coffee mug until butter is melted. Drink!

I have been getting it for years and I think it helps.

-i've heard about some people who got the shot, but getting the disease and dying from it anyway. but there are also those that never got it, but turned out fine. ironic, isn't it, but it doesn't to suprise me at all.
-the news people may have good intentions regarding keeping people informed, but they also tend to put paranoia in folks, too, so don't listen to everything they say, b/c not only is it not all true, it could get you in trouble somewhere down the road.

Pianafetish, I am a high risk group with severe asthma and a case of nearly annual pnuemonia. I had the flu shot last year and this and so far have experienced the healthiest winters I can remember in my 45 years!

Massachusetts actually instituted fines and jail time for practitioners who gave the shot to unqualified patients!

But today...all restrictions have been lifted, no age limit etc. Seems we have a 250k surplus!!??

No notable incidence here, but just today I feel like crap (I can say crap) with all the suspicious symptoms.

Oh, geez, I can't afford it now. I'm moving in two weeks, and havent started packing yet. ugh!

Get a pneumonia vaccine shot, Beelady. They aren't sure it's 100% effective, but if you're getting annual bouts of pneumonia, you ought to do it.

Yhabpo: I have no idea what it was. It was through the VA hospital and I was terribly sick for the first time in YEARS!!!! Others who took it (not necessarily from the VA) also had the flu shortly afterwards. I had had the pneumonia shot much earlier and there were no ill effects from it and it lasts for five years. After my experience last year I decided to opt out of getting the shot this year--so far I'm fine. For those who have good results--great. I don't want to go through those miserable days again if I don't have to do so. Fortunately, good friends brought soup, juices, etc., to keep me going! \:\)

No sign of flu in the D.C. area.

None of us got vaccinated. I don't trust that shot.

My understanding is thus: Some people may have an allergic reaction to the shot. Before getting the shot, you should ask for or receive a list of things that, if you're allergic to them, you might not want to get the shot. (I seem to remember thimerosol and egg whites on the list.) This is not the same thing as getting the flu from the vaccine (as long as it uses dead virus). There is a nasal spray vaccine which does use live virus and is not recommended for high risk people.

For those who get the flu despite having received a flu shot, you may have been infected prior to or shortly after receiving the shot (it takes a couple of weeks for your body to develop flu antibodies). Or, you may having caught a different strain of flu than that which the vaccine is forumlated to prevent. I believe the vaccine is changed each year to combat the two or three strains that are predicted to be most prevalent. The prediction could be wrong, or you might just be unlucky and got one of the less prevalent strains.

Disclosure: I'm not a doctor, and I don't work for a pharmaceutical company that produces flu vaccine.

Indeed, a person ought to be wary of dubious generic vaccines that may have been imported from a foreign country.
