What do you people think of female barbers?
I entered a commoners' barber shop and found a women cutting a man's hair. I felt extremely uncomfortable and discreetly walked out.
How can there be female barbers? How can a man be comfortable with a women trimming his beard? Isn't a female wielding a razor obscene?
I called a private barber, and while he was trimming my beard, I asked him about this subject. He replied, "that's would be the equivalent to a male sanitary napkin salesman." I agreed.
My wife commented that only females tend to her hair.
What do you people think?

When it comes to female barbers, there's no such thing as too much off the top.

What's the big deal with male vs. female when it comes to a haircut?
I don't need a barber because I don't have a beard. The only time YOU should be troubled by a female wielding a razor would be if you'd made her mad and she had PMS.

Me thinks you've got too much time on your hands...! But, since you're talkin' hair and since the weather is nice, I've left my clippers in the barn. I cut my hair (buzz it) right in the alley-way. In another month, I'll be using size 40 blades. While in Japan last June and feelin' a little shaggy, I stopped at a barbershop. It started with a head and shoulder massage from the wife. This was followed by having my head washed. I then chose the blade size that I wanted. After the cut, came a hot towel and then a cold one. Then we visited and had hot tea, while they practiced their English. I was charged 3000 yen and gave them 4000.

That post was odd, comical, unusual, thoughtful and so far out that Yhabpo I have to say that I just don't understand you sometimes...
I love to cut hair... I can understand your unease... It is kind of intimate isn't it..? I always thought I'd be an excellent hairdresser, but I really don't like the smell of people, and I guess I wouldn't want to cut a man's hair I wasn't related to because of that 'personal space' issue.
Thanks for posing the question.

I have brown curley/wavey hair and when it gets too long I just cut some off. Always looks good--or at least no one has ever complained.

I'm glad you discreetly left the premises without issuing a Fatwa.

You know, there are trillions of follicles on this earth that are constantly growing hair; you'd think they'd find a way to make clothes out of it, or something useful.

The long hair men wore in the early 70s used to drive my ultra conservative father nuts. He would mutter about "why do they all want to look like disciples?" and so on.
As a response to these mutterings, I developed my own ridiculous theory. I told him that the general belief among young people was that the hair was taking up too much space in their heads and they needed to let it grow long so the weight would keep it pulled and give brain cells a chance to expand.
The funny thing was I think he actually believed I was telling him the truth.

We have some biker neighbors and the woman, a 53 yr. old tough chic.. (she's got a 20,000 dollar bike and lives in a shoebox) never cut her hair.. She had a butch in front and a braid in back that almost reached her knees .
Anyway she just cut it off and donated it to women with cancer.
Our school had a kid undergoing chemo and EVERYONE, male and female in the class shaved their head one day as a show of solidarity. The girls cried many tears during a little award presentation..

If you were injured in a car accident, would you have a problem with a female surgeon operating on you? Or if a transfusion was necessary, would you object to receiving a woman's blood? I'd have no trouble with either of those two and I have never indicated that it would be so. The problem isn't so much as cutting hair, but concerns facial hair. No man should see a women mending facial hair. Should men sell brassieres? Should they fit them too? Some things are strictly gender specific. Where I come from this is a fancy word for charging way to much for cutting some hair. He comes with his equipment in a bag, we pick a chair, and he cuts my hair in the privacy of my home. It's not fancy, nor is it expensive.

These days I have my hair cut every three years, not at a barber, at a great clips. I've been doing this for about 20 years now. Prior to that I used to go to a barber.
I wouldn't be comfortable with a female barber. I'm perfectly comfortable with a female hairstylist. A barbershop is like a club, where men talk about things they wouldn't discuss with their spouse. It's a very macho thing. Plus you can smoke at some barbershops if you're the smoking type.

In medical school I had a huge crush on the gorgeous woman that cut my hair. I'd get nervous before going in for the haircut. Sweaty palms and all. First she'd shampoo my hair. She'd massage my scalp in a way that would almost make me pass out. Then she would gently dry my hair with a towel. Through all of this, I'd be right up near her breasts as she made small talk. Her perfume drove me crazy. Just a hint of the most passionate of scents... Then she'd start cutting my hair...her breasts right there the entire time. By the time she asked me if I was satisfied with the haircut well, frankly, she could have scalped me and I'd have said "HE** yes" as the drool ran down my chin...

Between johnmoonlight's and Tom's posts, I have been correct to discern a sexual connotation to female barbers. Another support for my claim is that a "barbershop" for men but staffed only by women is usually a bordello.
I'm glad some people here has agreed with me. I'll consider my encounter as an unfortunate occurrence. I won't shy away from "public" barbershops.

Now I understand the annoyance of having the thread subject diverted. (Especially when the diversion is, yet again, homosexuality)
Although I believe my plight is more important than that of a homosexual, I'm sensible now that I should stick closely to the subject instead of furthering my political agenda. I apologize to the participants of the Canadian election thread.

Apparently, people don't heed subject lines.
Kathyk, Didn't we agree to call me either as "yha" or "yah"? Jeffrey's preference, "yby", isn't annoying since "yby" cannot be pronounced.
JBryan, Among men, metaphors for the male genitalia are inappropriate and unnecessary.

I have been going to the same hispanic lady barber for over 25 years now. She is in her early 80's, I think, but doesn't look it. I always get compliments about my hair.

Since it is obvious that you don't know which end is up, she might shave the wrong end - and that would be an insult to a woman......

just as an aside, i dont know any female urologists, but alot of male gynecologists.
and proctologists come in all shapes sizes and genders...
so ,maybe some occupations are gender specific (not hair cutting but others...) and others not.

I remember folding thousands of cloth diapers weekly.. After cleaning them out in the toilet, we'd soak them in Diaper Soft - then wash them with bleach and hot water.
I folded 3 or 4 loads a week for a decade (at least it seemed that intensive). I wouldn't have minded, but it seemed that I always had to change the baby too.

There's a new coffee room already ready for you. Check the "changes" thread.
