Dragged my self out of bed to write this...

I've been massively dehydrated all day, basically causing me to puke my guts every hour out even though there's nothing in my stomach because I'm too sick to eat.

It's really convenient actually - too tired to stay awake but too sick to go to sleep.

Tips? Help?

Gads, Brendan - do you think you have food poisoning? It's going around here - e. coli on the romaine lettuce. You ought to at least call your doctor and get some advice. Sucking on ice cubes sometimes helps. Food isn't as important (at least not in the beginning) but you need to keep some fluids down. Jello and saltines are fairly easy on the stomach, ginger (as in real ginger-ale) is supposed to be an anti-emetic. (of course, none of these things worked for me with morning sickness, but I am assuming that's not your problem!) Do you have a fever? Again, call your doctor. Hope you feel better soon smile Jodi

Hmm,

Not to contradict Jodi, but there is another approach. Assuming you haven't been sick for more than a day or two and that your only "complaint" is puking.

When my daughter got a stomach virus, there was simply NO WAY she could keep anything down. Not food, nor water, nor soda of any kind. Nothing. On our second trip to the Dr, we got the following advice.

Stop eating and drinking for 24 hours. No food, no water, no nothing. Give the stomach a chance to rest and heal itself. After 24 hours, start with a very small amount of water (2 or 3 oz max). If that stays down, have a bit more about 45 minutes later. If that stays down for an hour, try 2 to 3 saltines along with some water. Gradually increase food and water until you're back to normal.

Seemed *wrong* to me when I heard it, but the doc assured me that you really can't get dehydrated in 24 hours if all you're doing is puking. So we tried it, and it worked.

By the way, DON'T do this 24 hour total fast if you also have diarrhea. Only consider it if your only problem is throwing up.

Jeez, Brendan. Most people just get angry at my posts. I don't know of anyone who has gotten physically sick before! laugh

Seriously, if this has only been going on for a few hours (less than 24), just give yourself some time. Sounds like a good case of 24 hour flu.

If it goes on much longer (not the feeling bad so much but the vomiting), you should see a doctor.

As they said above, stay off the liquids and foods. If you need some liquid in your mouth, try sucking a little on ice cubes. Don't drink too much though, even of the ice cubes.

Once you have not thrown up for a few hours, try some hot tea (mild) or some clear soda. But just a very ltitle to see if you can hold it down. Then build up slowly -- mild liquids first. Maybe some chicken soup!

Yes, you guys are correct - N.P.O. for 24 hours. It's the "massively dehydrated" comment that worried me. If you are not truly dehydrated, then suck on ice cubes to "quench" your thirst, and let your stomach rest. Good luck! Jodi

I'd agree with the conservative advice, except that we're in the middle of a pretty hot summer here in the midwest, and you really can get seriously dehydrated without the ability to take in any fluids, especially if you're not in air conditioned digs.

Assuming you haven't recovered, if you're still plugged in to your student health service, get ahold of the advice line. If not, see if any of your local emergency rooms has a similar telephone service. And if you can't stand up without getting dizzy, or your urine has turned brown, or you feel like you can't think clearly and have difficulty understanding this, then get into the nearest ER by having a friend drive you or call an ambulance.

This sounds like something I had last weekend. It started late Saturday evening. I had trouble at "both ends". What a mess. :rolleyes: Luckily, I made it through 2 services on Sunday morning. I told the pastor to head for his guitar if I wasn't around. At the second service (different church) the priest happens to play passable hymns. Would you believe that he plays an old pump organ at a rural Episcopalian church, then drives to town for a second service? Anyway, I left during the sermon, returned just in time for offering and felt fine after the last hymn. But what a nightmare. It was the first time that I'd ever gotten sick on Sunday morning. I must have actually been dehydrated. I sure did get light-headed and a little dizzy. Hopefully you will feel fine in 24 hours. Take care. We're thinking about you. Bye.. smile

Sounds miserable, Brendan. Around here, Dr.Mom uses diluted apple juice, or better yet, gatorade. Just a tablespoon at a time to start with.

Also, take a moment to remember how terrible you feel. Like Jodi mentioned, it's like morning sickness, only hopefully you won't have this for several months. Look at this as an opportunity to sympathize with your wife one day. And when she says, gee honey, I feel a little better, how about some pickles and ice cream....you will be happy to drop whatever you are doing to go get it for her. laugh

Brendan, not sure if you are still suffering, but my doctor's advice for your symptoms (food poisoning / stomach flu) is to drink Coke or anything sugary, except fruit juices ('cos of the acid). The idea is to get both water and carbohydrates into your system. Those isotonic drinks that people drink after sports/exercise would also be great at replenishing your lost fluids.

I actually feel 65% better. It really sucked yesterday because I had to play a wedding in the afternoon. The organ loft is anything but cool. frown

But mostly, I've been drinking lots of gatorade and eating some small portions of oatmeal and that seems to have helped.
