I realize this whole thread is an outrage to some here as community standards vary with geography, and how people are socialized by their parents, community and religions.

Rosa Parks' action would have gone unnoticed in New York.
But Rosa Parks didn't hang out on the Internet.

As a community we have to decide what atmosphere we want here.

A taunt is an insult. People do it to p*ss you off, or to try and make them feel superior.

I used to get taunted at school because I had ginger hair. I hated it.

Kids are like that, though; they are very thoughtless and selfish. The real problem is when adults act the same way. They should know better.

In juxtaposing the issue of gay rights versus civil rights, I think one needs to look only at the support of the black community for gay rights.

It ain't there.

They do not equate the two, and I can't say I disagree with them....

For my hybrid car and how I brag too much and act pious about it.
For being an atheist or agnostic.
For spending too much on my piano when I have a leaky roof.

There are a million things that are fair game for discussion.
Why?
Because I chose them, and can change them based on input from others.
But don't taunt me for being white, having freckles, or being gay.
How I was made if off limits to criticism.

And if you do criticize, it says more about you than me.

Since when does one maligned group require the support of another maligned group to validate the fact that they're discriminated against? The logic simply does not follow.

You need to get out more.

During the last round of national gay marriage/gay rights discussion, it was noted in more than one source that the gay rights movement made multiple overtures to the black community, trying to win their support. The essential argument was that gay rights was a civil right, not unlike those struggles of Rosa Parks, Mr. Eggars, or Dr. King.

They were kindly, but firmly shown the door.

I guess I kind of like Rosa Parks in some ways.

A couple years ago when a female golfer wanted to play at Augusta, the black activist community was also approached and asked for comment. Exact same idea - they wanted some backing. The black community largely refused. I don't think it was because they don't feel that women shouldn't have equal rights, but because they are still fighting their fight and don't feel a need to get involved in others. My instinct is their "refusal" to get involved in the gay rights issue is largely the same thing.

(Just on a side note, the whole thing about women playing at Augusta is, I realize, a different issue being a private club and all. It's just the most recent example I could come up with.)

She did not look silly at all. Many very respected men didn't make it either. But it did put the thought in my head that maybe men and women WERE made differently, with different strengths and weaknesses.

If I got into a boxing ring with apple*, you can bet that I could beat her up if I wanted to because I am a guy and she isn't........but I never would.

I also could not breast feed a child or start pushing puppies out of places I don't have.

Most people are selfish and are concerned primarily about their own problems. This is human nature. Why is this relevant to whether gays also should have equal rights??
