I am so clueless. I have no idea 'what to do'/'what to buy' for my girlfriend. I had thought that maybe a weekend getaway to somewhere like New York would be great but I don't have that kind of cash in my bank account.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What was you most memorable Valentines Day like?

I feel so utterly confused, my Christmas present turned out to be a disaster and now I don't know what to do.

Just to clear things up, I could give her a gift certificate to Target and that would be okay. But I really what to do something special.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Zymtil, if you want to get it right you'll have to probe a bit - for want of a better expression. Find out if there's anything she's been after for a while (could prove cheaper than you'd thought ;\) ), that way you'll have the confidence of knowing you've chosen wisely. You could ask her straight out or try a more subtle approach. Maybe ask one of her friends. One of the best bits of present advice I read on here was from Plays when she suggested that one of the guys buy his partner something she wanted but wouldn't normally buy for herself. Sensible, because it's something *she* wants but won't feel guilty about when someone else has bought it. \:D
I've avoided any specific ideas because I don't know your girlfriend and I'm not really into presents myself. Bad excuse for a poor memory actually. ;\)

Get her some really sexy underwear - some that she wouldn't buy herself, but some that you would like to see her in. Also some flowers to balance out the sex vs. romance. Perfume is always a safe bet, if you know what she likes. Or, take her dress/shoe shopping - she probably has had her eye on a dress/some shoes for a while but she feels to guilty to buy herself.
Just guessing!

If you can compose music, write a song for her.
