One of my biggest pet peeves is people who have pride by association. In other words, that guy invented the paperclip and he is purple. I am also purple, therefore I am proud of my purpleness, even though I have never done much myself. It doesn't matter if it is race, religeon, geography, local sports team success, whatever. When someone who hasn't done something gets all puffed up over someone else's accomplishment, which they had nothing whatsoever to do with, just because they have some random similarity, it just annoys the p*** out of me.
Does this bug anyone else?
What is your pet peeve?

Watching sports on TV, and feeling anything.
Braging next day if your team won.
It is as if *you* personally played and won.
If you like baseball, go play it.
You don't get any credit if you weren't on the team.

A guy at work got a new truck.
He tells me his truck can kick my hybrid's ass.
Okay, I think, can he kick my ass?
And if he could, so what?
People project their person into their car.

Machismo I guess is my pet peeve.
I don't understand it.

Some people don't listen when you talk to them.
My boss is that way.
He cuts people off with a VERY LOUD BOOMING VOICE.

Wow
You'd think I would have known.
I honestly didn't know purple was a gay color.
Honestly.
Thanks

Mano-man how have I survived as a gay man for so long not knowing about the gay power of the color purple?

Whew, I feel much better now.

Here's another pet peeve of mine. People who can't park in the center of their space.

Keith,

That hits my button more than anything. I make great effort to be perfectly straight and centered within the lines, and it p***es me off to see some one who takes up 2 spaces.

LB,

How about when the lot is crowded, and the only space to park in is next to some jerk's car that is so far over, that the only way to get out of your car is to squeeze through the 6 inches of space available to you.

People who take up two spaces often get public notices for this offense. It usually costs them their deductable ($250, $500) to repair the numerous, long key gouges in their paint jobs.

Keith

If you open your door hard enough to put say a 2" dent in his car, you will have 8" then.

If the open space is on the offenders drivers side, I will park about 3" away from them and then watch as they have to crawl in through the passenger side.

Maybe I just enjoy being annoyed. Here is another pet peeve of mine.
That just about any type of hideous violence and disgusting subject matter can be shown on t.v., but if anyone ever saw a woman's nipple, it would be the end of the world.

My pet peeve is with threads about pet peeves, and I have a bigger pet peeve with people who reply to threads about pet peeves in regards to pet peeves of their own, which spirals me into a quagmire of endless pet peeves spawned by an infinite loop of hate.

Oh, and orange sponges. Green or nothing at all.

"One of my biggest pet peeves is people who have pride by association"

A purely human trait that we all have. If we didn't have pride in our "family", then we aren't human. IMHO It's natural to extend the boundary of family to include everyone up to and including the entire human race.

So Keith, you'd feel no pride when your child does well in a spelling contest at school or when they make it through the school play without tripping over their own feet? How 'bout when your spouse earns recognition at work or a promotion?

Pet peeve: People who never learned the protocol of walking on the right side of the stairs or the sidewalk.

Another pet peeve: People who smoke right in the entry to the building so I'm forced to walk through their sh*t to get in.

Another pet peeve (happens alot in my neighborhood): You're in line at the green grocers (for instance) and the lady ahead of you waits until the cashier has rung up the total before she even opens her purse. Then you have to wait for her to find her wallet, and then wait till she searches every pocket in her wallet and purse for the exact change.

Another pet peeve: People who walk into the deli while you're on line and think it's their right not to wait on line because all they want is a packet of cigarettes. Really ****es me off!!!

Another pet peeve: Cashiers who take the liberty of assuming you don't want that penny in change. (I couldn't care less about the penny, but I don't like the presumption).

Another pet peeve: Cashiers who put a "tip" jar out.

NYC offers many opportunities for pet peeves, I better not continue, I'll end up despondent.

 \:\)

Bob,

If my child or spouse earned recognition, I probably contributed somehow. Through some sort of support or guidance or whatever. I might then feel a legitimate sense of pride in my contribution to their success, and a genuine happiness for their accomplishment. It is when people feel proud because their great great uncle wrote a novel, or someone of their same ethnic or religeous background pitched a no-hitter that I get annoyed.

:D No, Steve, I would never do this. However, I frequent a certain Corvette forum where this topic comes up (all too often). It seems that some car owners park in between car spaces to ensure their car doesn't get dinged. And the appropriate response seems to be to damage the car by keying it.

This is not the right thing to do. If you are worried about your car getting dinged then you should park far away at the end of the lot, which is what a lot do (including me on occasion).

Now this brings up another interesting thing. You can park a $50,000 car at the end of the lot a hundred feet from any other car and some old rust bucket will park next to you, usually very close, for no freaking reason other than to annoy you. This is why some people carry dykes with them (side clippers, wire cutters for the uninitiated). When that person comes out of the store they will have four flat tires because all of their valve stems will have been chopped off at the wheel.

I would not do that, either, but there are people that do.

C'mon, Bob, we would have a personal connection with our spouse or child. If the Chicago White Sox win a game it has no effect on my life. I make no more money nor get any more vacation time off. Their performance does not reflect well nor poorly on me. My life is neither better off nor worse off because they won or lost a game.

Kenny, I share the same pet peeves, which is why I never would enjoy going to a sports bar with a bunch of guys to watch a game. Suddenly, it is all about machismo...waving the clenched fist in the air, grunting, commenting about the blonde with big breasts, belching, etc.
I would much rather hang out with a bunch of women or...gay guys (Did I just say that?)
Eusebius, I'm with you on the "literally" thing...literally. :p
Gryphon, I agree. How can a person get through school and still use a sentence such as this:
"Me and him are going to the game tonight."
I also hate when people make a statement such as, "Please give the money back to he and I."
Pseudointellects.
I hate the use of, "I could care less."
I hate lack of manners in the grocery store. I hate when I spend 10 minutes picking out the best nectarines or apples, only to have the cashier throw the back full of fruit into the cart from 4 feet away.
Bernard, speaking of the penny thing; my brother and I sometimes go to a certain bar for a beer. There is one bartender who will take a 20 dollar bill for 2 drinks and assume that the rest is tip. We refuse to let him serve us anymore.
I hate tailgaters and telemarketers.
I hate when a person tries to get a laugh out of a group of people by making fun of someone else in the group.
I hate when patients come into the ER with a broken hand from punching the wall and look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that they will need surgery to fix it.
The list could go on and on...

How about the use of 'to, too, or two' - Barely anyone gets it right. Sad commentary on the state of our education system if you ask me.

The "I could care less" statement drives me nuts too.
