I do not begrudge Phil, Tony and Michael their monetary success. They had very little when they wrote and played great music.

I was of course disappointed but I understood exactly what was going on.

Peter even went pop.

The only one who never really did was Hackett.

Hackett is one of the most underrated guitarists ever.

Have you heard Hackett's Momentum CD? It's incredible.

I haven't. I haven't actively listened to prog rock in years, until I recently got the remastered Close to the Edge (which completely floored me) and Octopus by Gentle Giant (which was a bore). And I haven't followed with any intensity any of the solo projects. I pick Howe over Hackett, though, and if you disagree, please get a load of Close to the Edge.

Two different styles and techniques.

Howe is awesome and I will give a edge to him for his sheer versatility.

Close to the Edge? It's in my iTunes library. I know it well.

Momentum is a classical album. Most of the pieces are original classical guitar compositions with some flute and other accompanying instruments.

He does a variation on a theme by Chopin and Boure'e on this album as well.

I believe it took a "Classical Album of the Year" award when it was released.

Here is the variation on a theme by Chopin if you want listen to it.

The Chopin, taken from an etude I believe, is very pretty, but I can't say I'm in love on the first listen. Surely well-played. What's with the bizarre vibrato at around 3:40? Sounds like he had a fit in the middle of the piece.

I never really thought of it as being bizzare.

Well, you certainly can say that ol' Steve never sold out to the pop music scene!

GTR doesn't count.

That's a great album, Mark! (Friday Night in San Francisco). I saw them on tour at the Auditorium in Chicago. It was pretty much just like the album.

I've been fortunate enough to see John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola several times each.

Mark, have you tried Radiohead? They're the best "art" band going. The Bends is a great guitar band album. OK Computer is one of the great records of the rock and roll era, IMO. Do you know these guys?

I have heard Radiohead but I am not that familiar with them.

I suppose I am going to have to take a closer listen to them!

Thanks Dave!

Mark: My pleasure. I love turning people on to these guys. I notice you haven't mentioned Pink Floyd (or if you have, I haven't noticed). I think of Radiohead as inhabiting the world of Dark Side and Wish You Were Here. Radiohead's got a truly remarkable singer, though, and they go further out with their sounds. Let me know what you think when you've had a chance to listen.-D

Oh I love Pink Floyd!

Especially things like Echos and Several Species of Small Fury Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Groovin' with a Pict.

Is that Sid Barrett era? I know Careful with that Axe, Eugene, See Emily Play, and other stuff from Relics, but not what you mention by name.

Mark, I'd also recommend Spock's Beard, especially if you were a big fan of Rush.

I have heard Spock's Beard

What I heard was good but it didn't grab hold of me if you know what I mean. Maybe I need to listen to more of it?

Ah, the Early Middle Period, I believe it's called by the cognoscenti. \:\)

Lemme know what you think about Radiohead. They have the benefit of being currently active, so, if you like them, you can anticipate new records from time to time.
