I know exactly what you mean. I don't own any of their stuff myself. Maybe I need to listen to more of it. Or, perhaps, maybe it's just not as good as the original progs. I really wanted to like their album "Snow".

Heck, I'm all for the "concept" album (I'd be a far poorer man for never having learned of "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".), but some attempts are more successful than others. Rush's "2112" was OK, but Pink Floyd's "The Wall" was much better executed, IMHO. (Neither approach TLLDoB, though!)

American Idiot is a great album! I don't agree with their politics, but I can't help listening to their music (been a fan forever. Even have tickets to their last show on the tour that starts next week).

So much prog rock, so little time.

Guys, this stuff is over 30 years old. Has nothing happened since to make you stand up and take notice? Clash, Buzzcocks, Ramones, Elvis Costello? Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure? Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden? Radiohead, Coldplay? Sigur Ros?

(Don't take too seriously, as this comes from a guy in the throes of a Prokofiev jag, but seriously Elvis Presley was still alive when the albums you're talking about were made.)

I am amazed by the songs on the first album which was recorded when the lads were but 16 & 17 years old. Sure they had some "strong suggestions" to add the strings to a lot of the pieces but the core compositions are incredibly beautiful. The fact that they were probably 14 & 15 when some of them were written provides even more "mystic" about them.

From the second album, "Trespass" the song "White Mountain" is a haunting piece. The song titled "Stagnation" is just so indescribably beautiful as is "Dusk"

Then it's off to the progressive rock races with "Foxtrot", "Nursery Cryme", "Selling England by the Pound" and the end of the Peter Gabriel era with "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".

You are right gryphon. Wind & Wuthering and Trick of the Tail are two of my favorites as well. In fact, I find it hard to pick a favorite album from 1968 through 1977.

Between 1969 and 1977 there is no song or composition on any Genesis album that I would call "second rate music". It is incredibly imaginative and original music that simply has no equal in the rock music genre.

Oh, heck yeah. Just look through my entries in this REALLY long thread. I don't live in the past, but I don't dismiss it, either. Sometimes it's just nice to relive one's childhood (as I was just a little nipper back in THOSE days!).

Understood. While we're on the topic of the old but ageless, any Kinks fans here? Particularly, Face to Face, Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society? Together with Pet Sounds and Revolver, these have got what I like about the 60s. And then there's my fetishes for Dusty Springfield and Gene Pitney. I'm not proud of them but they've hooked me.

I liked some of The Police. I forgot about them.

Probably others too but they just do not stick out in my mind anymore.

If you don't like the Ramones, then I suppose you can't really like The Beach Boys who were the Ramones' biggest influence. That and cheap horror movies. I hope you give some of these folks a try. They don't do the long songs like the progsters, but I've found great intensity and other rewards in a perfectly wrought 3 minute pop song. For example, possibly the best song/performance of the 1970s, IMO, is Big Star's September Gurls. Have you heard it? Pure ecstacy.

Artsy group based in Montrιal. The lead singer sounds an awful lot like Morrissey at times.

Very eclectic mix there. Love the Kinks, although I may not be familiar with the more obscure. To Dusty and Gene, add Roy Orbison, who I think one of the greatest rock balladeers of all time....I way him in concert one night before he died....

You must understand my musical mind set. I hate 99.999% of "rock/pop music".

Mark, I'm almost the diametric opposite. I like music. I like all kinds of music, even stuff that I know (intellectually) is schlock. I can't help myself. I'm musically promiscuous!

King Crimson is not strange stuff. Well, except "Islands", maybe....

I think most people would classify "Cat Food" as at least a little strange!

Most of that stuff you list is awful. You couldn't make me listen to the Clash or the Ramones or Nirvana or Pearl Jam with a gun to my head. Abysmal. Been a Costello fan since day one and have the vinyl to prove it. Done the Joy Division/PSB/New Order/Electronic and Smiths/Morrissey thing. (Backpacked the 100-Mile Wilderness listening to New Order). Personally I'm a big jazz fan (see Jean Luc Ponty live) but every once in a while you gotta go back to some of your roots. Santana, ELP, Tull, Strawbs, Yes (and as huge a fan as I was in my earlier years, I am less fond of Yes today).

i wonder if the fact that most of us love the music we grew up on as teenagers make us not appreciate current things.

i cannot recognize any of the music of the groups listed, yes can still rememebr every note and lyric of "my" music.

not that i havent liked more current things, but i dont have the passion for anything thats not written in late 60's or decade of seventies.

thread on grateful dead by jf made me think of this, why is music from when we were say, 16-25, marked indelibly on our psyche??

I came to Roy Orbison late and warmed up to him in a hurry. The voice of an angel. Brian Wilson's new Smile is a wonder. But more than anything, though, if you haven't given Pet Sounds a real try, you're missing one of the great musical experiences. Paul McCartney was flabbergasted when it came out, and was especially taken with the songwriting and the bass playing. It's got Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows and Sloop John B, but the arrangements are what keep me coming back. The sound of the record is one-of-a-kind.

I, too, am promiscuous musically. I recommend it because you don't catch diseases, although the neighbors may threaten you from time to time.

I learnt Do You Remember Walter not long ago. And Dusty Springfields version of Oh No Not My Baby too. I've also just learnt Charade - the song from the film.
