Great band! Bill Kirchen has got to be one of the best Telecaster players around- next to the late Danny Gatton at any rate. I took guitar lessons from a fellow who actually filled in for Bill Kirchen on a Lost Planet Airmen tour of the pAcific coast back in the early '70's. Aside from the raucous road stories about the band tour he had nothing but praise for the musicality and keyboard brillance of Commander Cody.

I usually listen to songs composed by Kanno Yoko. Tanaka Rie is my favorite singer...right now I'm listening to Zankokuna Tenchi No Teze (Cruel Angel's Thesis), which happens to be composed by Kanno.



...I probably should have just said I was listening to Chopin or something. Oh, well.

Actually, at this very moment, I am listening to a recording of myself singing Mozart's "recordare" from the the Requiem from our last concert ( I'm the alto that gets to start that AMAZING section). Kind of random, huh?

picked up a set of CDs of Toscanini on a label called "History" -- 10 CDs for something like $28.00 - on sale. There's a huge amount of music on these discs - Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, Borodin, Prokofiev, Franck, Debussy, Wagner, Rossini, Beethoven Cherubini...you get the idea...great box for work -- that compressed sound actually is a bonus.

KB, you like drummers? I've got some awesome Tony Williams, too. I've seen Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford, both of whom blew me away. Also Chester Thompson (who by the way also plays some mean keyboards as well).

Your mention of Mahavishnu Orchestra brings back a lot of memories. I've been listening to them, Shakti, and various incarnations of John McLaughlin's musical pairings since Birds of Fire, when I was in high school in the early 70's. In MO's music McLaughlin will call out sections like: improvise for 32 measures based on your birth: Virgo, Dorian mode, Gemini, Lydian mode, etc.

I had the chance to see a Terry Bozio clinic here last year, and he absolutely blew my mind away.

Akira Jimbo was supposed to be here last month, but our blizzard scared him away. He's another one who's amazingly fun to watch. He has triggers all over his kit, and essentially becomes a one man band.

Jeff Procaro is another one who really impresses me... as well as Carter Bueford from the Dave Mathews Band.

I really enjoy listening to good drummers, but Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland still do it for me more than any others. Still can't figure out my love affair with them, but they rock.

Many drummers are merely metronomes rather than musicians.

Although you might want to watch it calling drummers untalented.... as the piano is a percussion instrument rather than a string instrument.

Scriabin Sonata No. 5 performed by Richter from a Czech Radio broadcast, September 24, 1972. This CD is part of a 15-CD set called "Richter in Prague". Superb!
