Stravinsky?

(not familiar with the threadbare suit anecdote, but he studied with RK as well)

Right, Renauda. It was Alexander Glazunov!

I am considered by most to be the greatest composer from my country in the past few hundred years. I have been commissioned to write for coronations, and have been knighted for my work. One of my works was composed as compliments to my closest friends, whose musical criticisms I gladly accepted.

Who am I?

laugh Yes, Renauda is right again, it is Sir Edward Elgar.

For the first half of my adult life I worked in the household of a wealthy man. I had everything a musician could want--honor, riches, and influence. But the life began to wear on me. I had to accompany him everywhere, I suffered a nervous breakdown when my wife died, and my benefactor's successor fired me. A fire destroyed the manuscripts to twelve of my operas, and my only daughter died. My life had come apart. Yet in the midst of my distress I composed a beautiful piece.

Who am I?

Yes, Monteverdi it is! He composed his beautiful Vespers in the middle of his distress.

I was a great composer, certainly considered by most to be the greatest from my country. I made many mistakes in my life, but always showed great care with my compositions, and was conscientious of every sixteenth note. My writings are filled with themes I did not consider good enough to use. A director of a major opera company wanted to commission a new opera. I told him it might be a long time before the work was completed. He replied that there was no hurry, he could wait three or four months. "Three or four months!" I exclaimed. "It takes me that long to decide between two different chords!"

Who am I?

gryphon,

I can't let this thread die... You, markjpcs, and Renauda have too much time and effort invested!

Would the correct answer be Debussy?

Yes, it is Claude Debussy!

Here's an easy one.

Although I am a conductor, pianist, composer, and songwriter, many remember me as being personally responsible for turning an entire generation onto the joys of great music.

Who am I? And what is my given name?

Yes, yes! It is Louis (Leonard) Bernstein!

When WWII broke out, I joined the army. Unfortunately I had the misfortune of being captured while trying to escape on an old bicycle. To bolster our spirits, I arranged to have a short concert with other prisoners with the few instruments we could get--a battered three-string cello, a clarinet, a violin, and a horribly out of tune, dilapidated piano with broken keys--playing a piece I composed for the event.

Who am I?
